    ok ive been working in the IT department of a big bank for the past year, to be honest its been a pain in the arse cause the phone is always ringing but ive learned alot and now doing 2nd line support while someone is away on leave for a few months and have been told i will be going back to 1st line support when they come back(there is no 2nd line positions available as of yet and im well 2 qualified for 1st line

    i went for an interview last week and have been offered a new job(its a more a 2nd line support job so not on the phones which is great and it gives me a more exposure to systems), and its 6k more a year, thing is that i will be paid through an IT services company so im slightly worried as to how promotions, salary increases etc will come about, should i take the new job and lose all the bank benefits?

    Is it a big three-letter-acronym one that advertises heavily on jobs ie? c--?
    Steer clear of them, or just anybody who has worked through them, poor rep.

    C-- is not a bad company, but you may not be seen as full time staff, as you may not be directly employed by the company (and thus not be able to apply for the same internal roles), but more likely employed by C--. Any idea what the turnover rate would be in the company? High or low?

    As for the bank, I'm guessing it's AIB? If you can, stay with the bank. AIB are a nice bunch to work for. The reason why there are no 2nd level positions available is due to this, I'd say. Before you hand in your notice, check with the manager, to see how long would you be waiting to get a 2nd level position there?

    Tell your current employer. They might offer the same money to keep you. If not, go enjoy the better job and higher salary.

    Put it this way you will get paid with the IT services companies though if anything goes wrong your fecked as they are a complete nightmare to talk to and get them to do anything.

    You are basically going to be hired to perform a job, whether or not that job will go any further is really upto the employer rather than the IT services company.

    Rather than thinking about money I would be asking myself.

    A) is it further for me to travel everyday
    B) is it going to be a full time position or short term one. It sounds like you have a full time job with the bank, be sure that this new position is not just a temp 6-12 month contract or something.
    C) Is this new company that I will be working in reputable?. Is it going to look as good on my CV as a bank?.


    For what its worth, everyone starts out in the helpdesk in IT. Everyone in IT at some stage answered the poxy phone followed by the "Yeah just reboot it and it will be grand". Don't lose heart, it takes a couple of years to move on to 2nd - 3rd level and when you do you will be wishing you were still on the helpdesk!.
