Just wondering if anyone had an entry for the Achill Half Marathon on 5th July 2008 that they can't use. I would be willing to buy their entry from them as I missed the entry close date and would like to do the event.

    Thanks

Sorry NR, I'm using mine. I don't think the organisers would be amused anyway about entries being sold.

From a selfish viewpoint I'm pleased that they're capping entries so we can maybe enjoy a bit of the landscape en route without having to battle for every square inch of road.

Exactly, Novice runner, I don't mod this forum (unlike the marathon threads) but you have 3 posts on boards and all 3 of them are trying to look for a number for this race. There is nothing on the race website to indicate that this is allowed.

When did the event sell out? I posted my application last week so I hope I got in.

Rob, it closed on the 28th May. The website said that the close date was the 1st June but they must have filled the places before then. You are probably out of luck as well. I sent them an email and they are not operating a reserve list or taking enteries on the day.

    Hi Novice Runner

I have an entry for Achill I'm not using. I will be down in achill as friends are running and we can do the swap there. Send me a mail at lcreane@invesco.ie if your still interested.

I too have an Achill half marathon race entry should anybody else be still looking to run...

Guys, I hate to sound like a headmaster here but...

...it is very unfair on the organisers to swap numbers without their knowledge. This is despite the fact that their rules might be silent on the matter. They need to know exactly who is in their race.

There are many reasons for this, the major one being safety. A race number immediately identifies you in case of an accident or emergency. Getting this wrong could have disastrous consequences.

Just from an organisational point of view the results will be wrong, and the race category results skewed.

It is disrespectful to the organisers who put a huge amount of time into the race only to give them this sort of headache.

This seems to be common in a lot of races now, I know someone who ran the bupa 10 k with someone elses number, and on the back had their contact details in case of emergency.

The web of number swapping deception came tumbling down a few years ago when some 55 year old woan ran around 52minutes in Ballycotton.

Just back from Achill. What an excellent event, everything spot on. A pity the weather sorta spoilt the 'tented village' food/entertainment thing afterwards. People really just wanted to get off for a shower.

And the course was a beast, tougher than Conn imo. The hills just kept coming with locals assuring you throughout that this was the 'last hill' - it never was! But a fantastic setting in which to run.

An excellent weekend! Made the 4.5 hour drive after work Friday from Naas and just about made it to race HQ before 10pm to collect bib etc. What a great day – despite a dreadful fall at mile 10! You might have seen the girl with long white socks with red bloody knees, hands and elbows racing towards finish like a bloody maniac. What a fantastic race for scenery. Finished in 1:35 hoping for 3rd female but slipped into 4th after fall. The turnout at finale in tented village after 4pm was disappointing alright but it was a very cold and miserable evening… everyone was in the pubs already, the “smart” ones! Good fun and buzz about Keel that evening though :) Hopefully official results should be on website soon

Spotted you at the end. Well done - Are the long socks to help prevent shin splints - Look like the ones Paula Ratcliffe wears

Anyone any idea when the Achill results will be out?

    Hi Sumac,

Some people were them for Shin Splints – I wear them for the calves, preventing them from seizing up post long-run and keep the circulation going when all of a sudden stop after an hour+ running. Yep they’re the same one’s Paula wears.
Hope you enjoyed the wknd as much! I’ve got tons of photos of it on my website, keeping account of all this year’s races for fun – and Achill was def the most scenic to date!

    Hi Lizanne83,

Good to see you've bounced back so well from Achill after your fall. I ran with you for a time out there (up to about the 8-mile mark when I got dropped :-)) - I was the guy in the red and white Galway City Harriers (GCH) singlet and feature in one of your photos. We spoke briefly afterwards as well where I was probably too elated with my own sub-1h38m to show it, but I was genuinely shocked with the cuts and lacerations you received - ya did really well to finish so strongly after that.

If you care to, feel free to read my own personal account of the day from the novice runner's point of view which I just got posted to my own club's website:

    http://www.galwaycityharriers.com/senior-news/the-achill-experience

Agreed, 'twas a great day out.

    Keep on running...

    /SC

Surely the answer to this issue of potential confusion over the person wearing a certain race-number in a race is the RoadId (http://www.roadid.com/Common/default.aspx) which ever runner should wear all the time anyhow (whatever about the ethics/logistics etc. of transferring race numbers - I'm neutral on this point simply because most races are now getting very expensive to enter so I reckon you should be allowed to transfer your entry if you're not going to be using it yourself, like where's the REAL problem?).
