    The on-road bike lane was already painted (just dotted white markings, no red surface). They could finish the inbound one anyway since it doesn't affect parking.

    Yes they have painted the white markings for the cycles but havn't actually legalised them by adding cycle lane symbols and red/orange colouring. If you ask me they are incredibly dangerous as buses and the like use this route and it would be difficult for two buses to pass each other if they were keeping out of the cycle lanes. I'd say they are deliberatly lashing this temporary measure there so cyclists shut up complaining and if a couple of them are mowed down by heavy traffic the council can cover their asses by saying the cycle lane wasn't complete :mad:

    I really don't know where the €18 million figure is coming from, the only complex piece of engineering I see needed for the job is the point where the bull island bridge crosses, again this is currently being refurbished at a cost of a few bazillion and most likely zero plans have been included for the cycle track and it will have to be levelled and a couple more bazillion spent on it. €18 million works out at €9473 a metre, I'd say the most expensive piece of engineering in the country.

    The poles for the signs are in place.

    But, they used broken white line markings (RRM023) which means that cars can drive and park in them (as they already do). The only difference for cyclists is that they'll now have to pass the parked cars with their right arms stuck out.

    No action has been taken about the cars parked illegally on the section near the off-license, which has a continuous white line in the centre of the road (it's an accident black-spot), nor the cars parked facing oncoming traffic, nor those on the footpath.

    Ominously, this has been stated locally as being an 'advisory' cycle track, which I think is Dublin City Council-speak for 'imaginary cycle track'.

    Ah yes, but who is 'they'? Dublin City Council will do nothing for cyclists a) If it inconveniences motorists and b) If it costs more than €9.99.

    Wait until the next election, then there will be plenty of promises.

    It was many years ago (before the InterWeb), but a rather rotund Dublin City Councillor (Paddy Belton?), was asked about what could be done to improve conditions for cyclists. His sincerely expressed response was that he hoped that one day 'all cyclists could afford cars'.
