Not well versed in digital photography but used to be able to upload pictures no problem from my camera to laptop but my camera isn't showing up anymore and can't seem to find it under My Computer either.

    Any advice?

    what's a card reader? :o
    The best invention ever!

    23-in-1-usb-20-card-reader.jpg

I have this one and it works with every card you can imagine

Also, the read/write speeds are much faster

Not sure why it wouldnt be workin now. Maybe try installing the drivers again, or restore your laptop to an earlier date if you have Windows XP

Yeah can't figure it out either. Interesting looking appliance. How do you then transfer files to PC and are these little babies expensive?

it connects with USB, but installs automatically

    Dunno, there everywhere!

Ebay would be the cheapest, but try Argos. or maybe even the pound shop! [euro, whatever]

    This ones €14.99 in argos

Around 2 euro delivered from Hong Kong...
    see here:
    http://www.dealextreme.com/search.dx/search.card%20reader
(reputable seller - I've gotten a lot of cheap gizmos from them already)

Or get it in a shop here for less than 10 euro.

Just take the memory card out of the camera and stick it in the reader and connect the reader to the PC using a USB port.

Could be just the USB cable...?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Another probably quite dumb question here but are usb cables for cameras universal or do I have to get one specific to camera make? It's a fuji.

it depends on the end of the USB cable that goes into the camera...that may be a unique fitting for your camera or it may be a standard fitting. For example my USB cable will work for my camera and my mp3 player.

Anyway, is there any chance you have other devices connected to your computer at the time you want to connect the camera?

I'm asking because sometimes when a device is connected it may assign a drive letter to the device and I've found in the past sometimes you might need to assign it a drive letter closer to A (like B or D etc..) and not closer to Z (like X, Y, W, P etc).
Sorry if this is confusing the hell out of you but I had this problem before and I solved it by renaming a mapped drive (connected device) and giving it a new letter that isn't currently used...example: Don't pick C because as you may know, the C drive is commonly used in PCs!

You don't say what type of camera you are using. It could be to do with the camera settings if you are using something like a Nikon D70 or similar. Go in to the menu and under tools (the spanner symbol), check the subsection 'USB'. There are two options - 'Mass Storage' and 'P PTP'. Check the setting 'Mass Storage' and this, hopefully, might fix it. With the D70 you can connect using the mini USB without installing the software and the device shows up on the desktop as an external disc (on my Mac it does anyway, not sure about PC's).

A lot of cameras have different types of usb connections, it's a pain in the a@@e. Things seem to be standardizing a bit and many seem to opt for the mini usb but at one stage I bought a device with five different types of connectors on it to cover several cameras.

thanks for the link Thirdfox, used this crowd months ago to buy magnets but forgot all about them and how cheap everything is on the site

Just bought a USB card reader for $8, won't use it much but handy to have and can't fault it for that price :pac:

    It's a Fuji A370...

In that case download www.irfanview.com and load your photos through that.

Its a photo editor, but great for connecting your Fuji through.

I've had three Fuji's and each had problems with the supplied software 'exif viewer' (I think), but I've resolved them with irfanview.com

Starting to think this may be the problem as there are other devices connected and when I plug the camera in, though I still can't find it under My Computer, the pc is recognising that there is a device connected as the icon to safely remove comes up. How do I rename a drive when I can't actually find the device in the first place?

As you can tell I don't speak fluent PC, sorry. :o
