I finally got around to watching this, and having read mediocre reviews i was prepared (i thought) for a poor follow up to Donnie Darko.

    Boy was I wrong.

It was one of the worst films I have ever seen. This film just tried too hard. It looked like alot of people wanted to work with him given the cast but it was far too complicated and boring to be in any way enjoyable.

Was the war angle mean to have some relevence to modern day?

    anyone else seen it?

I really, really like Southland Tales. A lot of people forget that it's parts 4-6 of a a story and to you have to read the TPB first to get up to speed. That said I still think a film should on it's own merits and not have to rely on the viewer going out of his way in locating parts of the story told in other mediums.

I actually enjoyed it a lot as well.

It feels like an attempt at doing David Lynch meets Robert Altman via Philip K. Dick... Sure it doesn't quite work... but it's an interesting journey nonetheless.

I've already gone into more depth on my thoughts on this film in a previous thread though.

I don't think its as bad as its hyped to be, its just extremely messy. The good ideas just struggle to come out.. Have said more in previous threads like Monkeyfudge, but its a flawed curio which with a bit more work could've been very good indeed. A bad case of trying to fit too much into one film though. (and some awkward editing from the longer cut - Jeanne Garofolo's cameo at the end is pointless in the new edit).

I thought it was a complete load of crap. Quit watching about half way through I was so bored, which I wouldn't normally do. It just didn't work (whatever it was trying to do).
