Use Frankfurters first time. Hard to mess them up, move on to meat after.
    If meat, turn often.

Cook EVERYTHING in beer. It's the Aussie way and makes the food taste sooooo good.

I'll bet my microwave against your barbeque that Italy beat Holland on Monday. Here, you can have the draw as well.

Make sure you have enough fuel to cook all of your food.

You organise the BBQ - You supply the meat. None of this bring your own crap.
Host should supply some beer, guests can bring more.
Have small children on hand to clean away plates before locking them under the stairs again.
Leave cleaning the grill until the next day (Soak it if required), otherwise this involves the host disappearing for quite a while.
If someone questions how well cooked something is you have the right to take it back off them, they've just forfeit their right to more food.
Make sure you know if someone coming is a vegetation, I've seen some disasters from this.
Keep some chicken etc. free of marinades, its very likely theres some fussy **** who wont eat it.

Always by a BBQ bigger than what you think you need. Afterall most BBQ's are parties with loads of people. A BBQ that can only hold 4 burgers aint worth jack!

Traditionall charcoal gives the better flavours but i prefer gas. If you are able to on a gas BBQ, throw some woodchippings on the gas below the hotplates to add to the flavour, making sure you dont do it in a way to set the thing on fire!!!

If your BBQ has 2 rings, then set one to the max and one to the min.

If you are new to it, i recommend getting a food themometer to ensure your meat (especially chicken) is cooked properly. If its over 75 degrees on the inside then its safe.

Chicken can be deceiving as most BBQ chicken in the shops come pre marinated in sauces etc so it can be hard for some people to tell if its actually cooked.

Try marinate your meats the day before you are cooking.

Finally despite what many people think, BBQ's need constant attention. For best results turn your meat regularly. Dont do what most do: "lob on meat, go off drink a beer, go back to BBQ and flip over, drink more beer." You should really turn the meat regularly.

    Finally, enjoy!

PS. south african wine is the best wine for BBQ's! ;)

Guinness sent me out a cool little bbq book. It has loads of recipes based on guinness marinated. Haven't used it yet but there are some good tips like, to get the best results for sausages don't cook over direct heat as the sausage will split and lose all it's lovely juices. Always cook indirectly it takes longer but tastes better.

For pieces of meat like steak don't keep turning it. Cook for about 5 minute one side then turn only once. The reason again being you'll lose all the juices turning to often. The idea is to seal the flavours in.

Don't leave the lit coals unattended, save 'roasting' your girlfriend until
    the fire has gone out.

Get a banana, split it down the middle, put a flake in, wrap in tin foil, throw onto the BBQ, serve with Ice Cream... The flake makes all the difference!;)

Put chocolate in an orange and cook it on the barbecue. It sounds weird but it's nice. It's a scout thing.

Assuming its charcoal you are using:

    1) wait till the coals turn white
    2) yep, a drop of water will speed up the process! ;)
    3) ehhhhhhhhhhh
    4) the right bbq tools are helpful
    5) no.

Veggies are perfectly acceptable if your making wraps or salsa for dipping your meat in.
Should I get the bbq tool belt in centra with spatula and fork etc.
Never mind that, Bulmers are giving away free BBQ tools with 14 cans in Eurospar.
