The old adage "A solicitor who represents himself has a fool for a client" applies double to everyone else. Hire a solicitor. Legal aid if needs be. You have no idea what the law dictates until you ask a professional. If you represent yourself in a district court the judge is liable to do anything, they absolutely hate that nonsense for the most part.

    I have done both OP

I repersented meself in court the first time I got pulled up, took 5 adjournments, but in the end I got down to a 1 month Ban and a $100 fine. course I wasnt done for DUI I was done for speeding and Parking and generally disobeying the rest of the Rules to the point where I was supposed to have a Ban in 3 States over here.

the Second time I got a Lawyer, took all of 45 seconds to hear the most beautiful words in the English language

    Case Dismissed.

if you have the balls for it representing yerself is an eyeopening experience into the legal system.

although, even if you were determined not to bring a lawyer into court It would still be a good idea to consult with a few before you tried it

I guess I have, but it really didn't require a whole lot on my part. Had called up a solicitor before hand and they said that I was better off without one as if I could afford a solicitor then the size of the fines would probably go up as that would show me as having money to waste in this case.

I turned up, they said "you've been a bad man, here's your fine, here's you ban, now bugger off." So I did as it was fair.

Don't intend on ending up in court.

OP, just go naked, covered with peanut butter, wearing a Fez, and plead insanity. You should be fine if you do.

I think if you show up to represent yourself it creates a bad impression. I think Judges tend to think you're not taking the matter seriously.

Whenever I've seen people represent themselves in Court, it has not ended well for them I'm afraid.

I wouldn't chance it if I ever end up there.

Don't even think of going near the court without a brief.

I know somebody that did. The judge thought he was taking the p*ss and imposed an actual criminal fine instead of the expected poor box donation.
