    Quick Tip - Mixing Paint

    It would seem that it's probably a bad idea.

    My father recently mixed 3 lots of left-over paint, and it came up with rather a nice raspberry colour.

    All three were typical matt immulsions and we presumed there would not be any problem.

    HOWEVER, despite the perfect silky mix and nice consistent colour, there was a problem, which we only discovered after painting the back room; It absolutely stinks, literally.

    The paint has been dry for about 4 nights already, and still the whole upstairs reeks. It's kinda like the smell of mould, or rot. Really, really disgusting. I suspect the smell is the result of some sort of chemical reaction.

    Just glad I don't have to sleep in that room.

    Anyway, I wont be mixing paints again in a hurry.:p

    Nah emulsion just goes off after the tin's been opened and then re-sealed....it's usually after a year or more but can be less if frost get's at the can(s)...the paint then separates, and the water grows mould/bacteria....you then shake it up and mix it with other paint and apply it and the room stinks until the paint cures fully (about 3 weeks)...open the window, the smell will go eventually.

    There is nothing wrong with mixing paint, once it's not "gone off"...

    Ah I see! Thanks for the tip!

    Yes one of the cans he used was really old white paint which had been resealed and left for months.
