    Quick Tip - Mixing Paint

It would seem that it's probably a bad idea.

My father recently mixed 3 lots of left-over paint, and it came up with rather a nice raspberry colour.

All three were typical matt immulsions and we presumed there would not be any problem.

HOWEVER, despite the perfect silky mix and nice consistent colour, there was a problem, which we only discovered after painting the back room; It absolutely stinks, literally.

The paint has been dry for about 4 nights already, and still the whole upstairs reeks. It's kinda like the smell of mould, or rot. Really, really disgusting. I suspect the smell is the result of some sort of chemical reaction.

Just glad I don't have to sleep in that room.

Anyway, I wont be mixing paints again in a hurry.:p

Nah emulsion just goes off after the tin's been opened and then re-sealed....it's usually after a year or more but can be less if frost get's at the can(s)...the paint then separates, and the water grows mould/bacteria....you then shake it up and mix it with other paint and apply it and the room stinks until the paint cures fully (about 3 weeks)...open the window, the smell will go eventually.

There is nothing wrong with mixing paint, once it's not "gone off"...

Ah I see! Thanks for the tip!

Yes one of the cans he used was really old white paint which had been resealed and left for months.
