    Hi,

I'm thinking of buying the EyeTV 310 and I'm wondering will it work with NTL. On the Elgato site (makers of the EyeTV) they state:
To receive PayTV on EyeTV 310, all you need is a compatible combination of Conditional Access Module (CAM) and a PayTV subscription SmartCard. Please check with your PayTV provider to ensure that it supports third-party standard CI receivers.

    Any ideas?

Nope, NTL does not allow third party hw, it is illegal to use anything other than NTL supplied box.

Thanks. How come it's illegal? I mean, presuming the user has a valid paid subscription with a valid card (which i do!).

It is illegal because they say so and you would have agreed to their terms when signing up.

Even if it wasn't illegal to use it, it wouldn't work anyway, this is a DVB-S reciever, Chorus NTL is (mostly) DVB-C.

Ah right, it's illegal in ntl land!
Thanks guys, guess I'll be getting the ntl dvr instead. On a side note, does anyone know if it allows you to burn your recorded content onto dvd? Just thinking of ways to get it onto my computer.

Much like Sky+ you would have to play the recorded content out onto a DVD recorder via a SCART port.

Basically, with cable you can only use equipment provided by the cable operator. It's a closed and proprietary network.

The decoder/receiver you're looking at is ideal for Free-to-Air satellite reception.

I suggest you stick to that if that's what you want to do!

There's some good, and legal free content on there now.
