Compact Confusion !

Was hoping to spend about €300ish on a compact digital. Traditionally I've used a Canon slr, but now want to buy a good quality compact. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers.

It's a pretty open question... but since you've used SLRs, choosing a compact means knowing what functionality you are willing to give up/live without.

    There's a good selector here: dpreview.com/compare

I nearly went for a Panasonic Lumix, but settled on the 'compact' Canon G9. It cost ~€300 (in the US...)

How compact is compact? If you're looking for a "shirt pocket camera", I wouldn't buy anything other than a Canon Ixus in that size range. Move up to the size of a G9 and you've a much greater selection from other manufacturers.

You see this is why I need help ! I'd like something more than point-n-shoot; something where I can change settings. The camera needs to be good for indoor & outdoor use. I like taking still life as well. I had a look at the G9. Looks impressive !

I just picked up a G9 today from Argos, excellent piece of kit and as I use Canon cameras it was very easy to use. I wish the 40d and the 1dmk3 had the screen off the G9 too..:)
