Taste of Dublin/Cork rip off

I was going to post this in the food and drink section but the fora in there are too specific and this is probably more of a social occasion anyway.

My friends and I were discussing attending this event as we'd heard good things. Having now checked the website and seen the price of tickets + extras we've been severly put off.

A standard tickets is €25 euro which isn't too bad. However this includes feck all - Entrance only really and some light entertainment. It then costs between €5 and €8 for each sample at the various stands. Strikes me that this could really rack up the costs. You also have to purchase "currency" instead of using euro. A little trick to lull into the feeling that you're not spending much me thinks. Any of the 'free' events seem to be very limited capacity so no guarantee of even getting in.

I have no problem paying for expensive tickets. I went to the Cat Laugh's last week and spent a fortune but felt I got value for money.

The Taste of Dublin idead however, seems to be the awful offspring of celtic tiger Ireland. It did very well last year. Maybe the slight downturn in the economy will make people think this year.

    Interested to hear your views.

    Rant over.

I'm going at the weekend and really looking forward to it. Think our tickets were around the €50 mark each as far as I can remember. Tbh I think it's a great way to sample a little taste from the various restaurants you have always wanted to go to and maybe haven't had the chance and a great chance to sample some great wines too. Yes, it does seem like a lot for what you appear to get but all in all I think it's a fun day out.

This will be my third year at the taste of Dublin. The 1st year I went I did so with the hubby, however, he has a bad back, and there was a severe lack of seating at the Dublin castle, so we left within 45 mins and was bummed as I couldn't get him into it at all.

Last year, I went to the Sat night session with my mate, and it was brilliant. My only complaint is that it was very crowded and hard to move around, and there were long queues for most of the restaurants.

Going again this year, but I took Friday morning off and my mate and I are going then. Hopefully we'll get to try a few more places :)

I'd say all in all, after tickets, you'd spend around €45 / Florins for each person. I go because I love trying new things, it's nice to see what resturants are good, and it's a fun day out. My other half really only likes to go to restuarants where he knows he'll like the atmosphere and the food, so it gives me a chance to try something I wouldn't normally get to.

Went to this last year and thought it was a farce. Complete and utter rip off.

I haven't heard great things about it, overcrowding, too expensive, etc.

I love food and the idea behind it appeals to me but I've heard that it wasn't great so I wouldn't bother going.

Paying to eat eh, that could well catch on.

Was the food really good or are the queues not worth it? It all sounds like a great idea to me but I'm not a fan of paying to queue.
