Do you set your dslr to RAW? Or do you convert to RAW when you upload to your PC?

It's not possible to covert TO raw.

Yes, I shoot raw 99% of the time, and then process on my PC.

I've been advised to use RAW, so I'm trying it out at the moment.

Always shoot RAW, convert to JEPG when I'm done with the image in post-pro. As has been pointed out already, you cannot "convert" to RAW from JEPG, only RAW to JPEG. By shooting JPEG you are immediately limiting yourself as to what is available to you afterwards in post-pro as the files contain far less information (only 8 bit) whereas RAW files contain all of the information captured giving you much higher quality (also note that file compression for JPEG reduces quality). And last but not least, you then always have the RAW file to go back to if you feel like going back to it at any stage and playing around with it.

However, it really depends on whether you process your images much (or at all) or not - if you don't then you may as well shoot JPEG, and also how stuck you are for space etc as obviously JPEGS will save you on space.

i rarely shot in JPEG.. it has been always RAWs... for some reasons, maybe to preserve the originals?

Cheers for replys. I thaught you could shoot jpeg and then convert to RAW on your pc afterwards.

It's called raw for a reason.

Could you ask a chef to change your medium well steak back to raw?? ;)

Raw is the almost totally unprocessed data. It needs to be processed in to jpg or other formats.

Once it's jpg, it's then an 8bit compressed processed image. You can convert to other formats (tiff, bmp, psd), but you can never make it raw again. It's already cooked. :D

I'm surprised I'm the only person here shooting in jpeg.I guess it's down to laziness in processing, only having one 2GB card and when I have shot in Raw there were no real visible benefits.I think I'll stick with jpegs.
