Shannon Cruise Recommendations

    Hello there folks.

Hoping for some advice from ya'll out there.

A group of us have hired a boat for cruising the shannon next month. Its a 3 night trip, starting and finishing in carrick-on-shannon. So I've done some initial research on where to head to but not sure whether to venture southwards or northwards, or both, and taking into account its only a half week trip.

As for heading north, I've looked into the following towns (sailing times from carrick in brackets):
    Leitrim Village (1 hr),
    Knockvicker (2hrs)
Acres lake and Lough key (3 hrs)
    Boyle (3hrs)
    Drumshambo (3hrs)

    Southwards, again we're looking at:
    Jamestown (1hr45m)
    Drumsna (2hrs)
    Dromod (3 hrs)
    Roosky (4hrs),
    Tarmonbarry (6 hrs)
Lanesborough (8 hrs – probably too far)

we're a group in late 20s, enjoy a few drinks, the craic agus ceoil, would like to take in a few traditional rural pubs, visit scenic spots for a wander, somewhere with a good atmospheric summer buzz.

    So, what i'm asking is:
    Any opinions on these towns?
Any other spots we should consider?
Any recommendations on itineraries/routes for a 3night/4 day cruise?

Any advice would be most graciously welcome and appreciated, thanks a lot!!! icon7.gif

    Oonagh.

We did something similar a few years, and took in both north and south of Carrick. We didn't spend too much time off the boat (which is the point of the holiday!) but it is important to find nice places to moor for food and pubs. The Oarsman in Carrick is great for pub grub and has a restaurant upstairs.

North to lough key is fabulous - cruise around the islands in the lake, then you can moor in the park. Knockvicar has a nice pub that does food.

Southwards - Jamestown has a lebonese restaurant. Drumsna has a nice pub, Dromod is better for food (though nothing much to see in it). The pub down from the railway station does the best food. From Roosky you can go out onto another lake (think its called Boderg) which is fun. Moor at Tarmonbarry (if you can get in!) for Keenan's - good pub with good food.

That was as far as we got in the 3 days.

thanks jared and muckety, very helpful. think it may be a case of heading north and south of carrick and do some power cruising, up early and that. thanks for the advice on food places. as for nighttime sups, any recommendations out there for places abuzz with the craic agus ceoil, from locals and visitors alike. or sitting outside at nighttime, not far from where the boat is anchored up, with a nice setting?

    cheers again.
