I am buying a new desktop for my photos only, I am leaning towards a imac any pro's or con's of either, Is a pc better or a imac for photo editing.

That's a real can of worms you're opening there Liam!!!

I'm a Mac user and think the combination of iMac and Lightroom is unbeatable, mostly because the operating system is so easy to use and intuitive.

A properly calibrated monitor and good work flow technique are the most important for photo editing. And that's pretty much platform independent.

If you have all your software on a windows platform already you may have to re-buy it for the mac. I can't be sure though, although it's something to think about. I'd love clarification if anyone can pipe in.

It's a hard one to call as you say the computer will be used for photos only. You won't really need a whole lot else on the box if you'll be spending all your time in your editing software, so is it worth buying a whole new OS if you'll just be looking at the same software you were the previous day?

    OSX/Solaris/Windows/Linux user here btw.

Tbh, whichever OS you're more comfortable with.

I've always used Windows based desktops and laptops at home, and Mac in college, but after every laptop I've had go down the sh*tter, I've just changed over to a Macbook Pro.

Neither one will make your processing better, and you do get a bit more bang for your buck staying with a Windows system, RAMwise anyways.

From what I know of Apple I really like it. I have not been prepared to be ripped off though so I have stuck with windows. Just put a Quad core machine together which flies. God only knows what a Mac equivalent would cost, if they were available.

Absolutely nothing to do with photography, as all the important apps are available for both windoze and osx. Even the machines are basically the same now that Apple have switched to intel processors. What you're buying is an OS really.

Having said all that, I've switched from PC to Mac at home and work now in the last 2 years, and I haven't looked back. Macs are just super machines and a much nicer OS to use.

Actually - you can very easily run Windows on a mac now either dual booting, or windows within a mac virtual machine application like VMWare - I do this in work for two apps that I cant run on OSX.

So to answer your question - mac, mac, mac, mac mac....

Oh, did I say mac ?

    :)

Its a personal preference at the end of the day and you can do the work on both mac and PC, I use a windows desktop and a macbook myself but when I want to replace my desktop its going to be a imac

I do use both for work and pleasure, but

be careful with the imac, the latest models have got rotten reviews, as apple has ditched the higher end screens for cheaper models. which mean ther ar only 6 bit insted of 8 or 10 bit

the other issue with the imac is expandability.

on the other hand from experience, I install computers into the visitor centre shows i do, the mac is much cheaper to own over its life than a PC as a PC generally needs more maintenance and looking after.
