I've got a recording of a live concert that i made on sky HD that i want to keep, but it's really eating into the space on my sky box.Is it possible to copy it to my HTPC. If so what leads do i need? There's an ethernet , HDMI,usb, esata, composite video and scart of the sky box.Any ideas?

AFAIK the only output for recording off a Sky HD box is via Scart, there are various Scart adaptor leads to suit your HTPC inputs

thanks for the reply,if i copy a programme does the transfer take place in realtime? i.e if the programme is 2 hours long does it take 2 hours to transfer, also does anybody know what the usb and ethernet connections are for?

I thought you could not copy recordings on Sky Box's? The recorded material is encrypted.

Even playing back recorded items you must have the same 'active' Sky Card you used to record or you get nothing?

I thought you could store from the usb connection on the front of the box. Someone trying to get me to upgrade told me you could use memory sticks etc. but you would have to play them back on your own box as it's encrypted.

    Foggy is basically right.

You basically can only "play it back". Then you need RGB analogue recording or RGB to S-video and then analogue capture (no HD). Composite Video capture is much poorer, though I do it with my cheap 90 Euro Plustron DVD recorder.

Some transmissions have Macrovision added on the Video out.

For BBC HD recordings in HD on PC get a PC satellite DVB-S2 PCI card.

There is no disk transfer, HDMI, USB or ethernet method.

The USB was for a portable device* and is used for diagnostics.
The ethernet may be used in future instead of phone line for Interactive and multiroom validation via Broadband.

(*Something like Archos 605wifi, which could still be done).

in the light of this i wonder would it be worth upgrading the hdd in the sky box from the paltry 160 gig (80 of which i believe is reserved for use by sky) one in it at the moment to,maybe a 500 or something similar,if anyone has had any experience of this,i would be grateful for your input.after all 80 gigs isn't much when you start loading HD TV onto it.

Seeing as how you're considering opening up the box, if the concert was on an unencrypted channel, then you may be able to transfer the file to a hard drive using extract+.

There was a thread on here a while back about something similar , the hard drive in a Sky HD box is a SATA type , it is possible to run a sata cable from the board out the back of the box. Then you can have multiple SATA hard drives and record as much as you want.

Obviously such a solution has its limitations , for instance all your stuff is still encrypted and you will always need an active sub to watch it.

In addition it doesnt hot plug , so to switch hard drives its a power down , switch hard drive , and power back up routine.

I think at the moment they all have analogue component outputs. Mine does. Yes, I am eagerly awaiting this box. I keep checking every week to see if anyone has got it yet. It's been delayed quite a bit, and it may be a while before it hits Europe.
