I have never used it but there is a review of it here. It did not do to good.

It may not be that big an improvement over the kit lens you have.

It's a fantastic lens. I have one, and I love it. In saying that, it's not the be-all and end-all of lens's, but it's a great upgrade from the 18-55...

It gets great reviews. But please don't tell me you're going to shell out €630 for it.....

Reviews I read are ok-ish, but it's def not worth that price/

I wouldn't take i just because of high aperture.
Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 in my opinion is a better option.

i have it came with my camera as kit lens, hence got it cheaper than buying it separately.

it is reasonably good walkaround lens with a nice wide angle for cropped body (the like of 40D, 400D and 450D), although the distortion is high at 17mm... sharpness is ok and the image stabilisation (IS) is a nice thing to have...

having all that said, if you are buying it alone you should really look into other alternatives... importantly if you could define what photos you would probably take, you would better off save some more money and get lenses that meet your needs...
