Was looking for ideas or suggestions for a weekend city break with the Missus in the winter. Have been to Vienna in December last year and liked that.

Does anyone have any suggestions for similar cities?

If you want something a bit different, look at Malta. Its dirt cheap to fly in the winter, nice and warm and very interesting for a week or weekend. Great food and cheap accom and basics. They speak english and use the Euro. I love the place (photo set in my sig!)

Yeah Bruges is lovely in the winter, checkout the smell of burnt chocolate everywhere you go! Its nice but I can't see it keeping you entertained for a whole weekend. Prague would be nice, there's lots to see, although the temp drops to 20 below, so wrap up well!

Personally I would go for Krakow, I've not been there myself but plan to very shortly, there seems to be a good bit to see and do, including a visit to Auschwitz, which I think everyone should be made see before they die!

Thanks for the ideas. It had not even crossed my mind to go to Malta which does look stunning in the photos. Bruges is another definite possibility as the OH loves chocolates.
Lots of ideas and may even warrant 2 breaks.

I Cannot recommend Riga in Latvia highly enough, especially for a couple, (you're unlikely to get hounded by the sex industry people) its really stunning, cheap beyound belief...seriously cheap, and theres lots to see...

If you are going in the winter head south. Seville will be lovely in winter - sunny, but not too hot.

Salzburg really is beautiful, the river is an amazing greeney colour and almost has a texture to it. You are surrounded by mountains, and can take tours of Mozarts house or the Sound of Music Tour. Oh, also the tour of the Saltmines, is a little on the kiddie side, but a good laugh anyway. If you time it correctly you could go around the time of the Christmas markets which are supposed to be amazing!!

Krakow. Spent 3 days there in freezing January and would go back in a tick. Very beautiful and interesting city. Along with Auschwitz, the Salt Mines and King Wawels Castle, would really suggest going on a tour to the former Communist part of the city- Nova Huta. Something very different- featured in Palins recent programme on BBC.

I would highly recommend Stuggart - I found it fantastic.

Yeah Stuttgart would be another option. Was there last year- had good time. Would also highly recommend Heidelberg (only 2 hours by train) at the same time. Great city- very compact with an amazing castle overlooking the beautiful old town.

Have you been to Paris and Rome? They are must see's in my opinion!

I highly recommend Krakow too. The city is beautiful and there is lots to do. I've been there twice and wouldn't hesitate to go back again. The flights, sightseeing, eating & drinking are all cheap and the people are nice.

I have to agree that Rome is beautiful but I have been there once with my girlfriend. I get the feeling she will be looking for a ring if we go again. I would say Paris would present an ever bigger expectation.

Salzburg looks like another great option as I did find Vienna very striking with great Cakes. Though I as I said earlier chocolate may win out.

Madrid is a cool city- las huertas is a cool bar area, take a look around the famous Prado musuem, all around the trendy Salamanca area is great for shopping and nice cafes, lots to see and a day trip to Toledo can't be missed- a little over an hour outside the city- gorgeous old walled city.
