Anyone using Google Adsense? Generating much income?

    Hey guys,

Anyone using Google Adsense on their site?

    I've recently launched a new website - www.divegear.ie .
It's for the buying and selling of diving gear in Ireland. I thought I'd give google adsense a go to see if I could generate much income from it but what's coming in seems to be pathetic. The odd dollar.

The whole adsense payment system seems to be very mysterious! They don't say how much you'll earn and when you'll receive money from the ads! Anyone got any idea what I should/could be earning from adsense?

The site is only young and it currently getting 80odd unique users a day and 300 or so page loads. It's growing though. Here's the stats.

I'm on the point of pulling it and contacting private companies to advertise.

    Joe

Adsense is very hit and miss for generating revenue. There is no doubt that a well SEO'd site with decent traffic will eventually start earning from it but it takes patience.

The first thing to worry about is site traffic, work on improving that. Then play around with your usage of the ads. Their placement and style have an unbelievably huge bearing on how much you could earn from them.

For example, just looking at your main page, I see the ads are right down the bottom. That's not going to help and remember you can put more than one ad unit on the page (at least you could the last time I messed around with it.)

Yeah I've been trying to keep them pretty minimal and out of the way... allow the site to grow without annoying users. Prob not the best plan for generating money from the ads though!!

Any ideas how much you could charge a company to advertise on the site? I've really no idea. Was going to offer it to maybe 3 or 4 companies and have a random ad come up on each page load. Every user seems to click on average 3or4 links so each ad should be shown to the user once (on average) per visit.

Many sites have it just below their banner, try putting it there, its actually not that intrusive.

You can earn quite a lot from Adsense, but it won't happen overnight.

Positioning, colours etc., will all make a difference

As close to the top left as possible. Possibly above the categories menu. It won't intrude on users viewing the content, and yet it's still plain obvious to be seen. If you supply the correct meta tags to Google, Google will supply brilliant ads. Also, because your colourscheme is dark, try to make the ads a slightly different colour.

As said, you can earn a surprisingly good amount of money from the ads but it's really a matter of doing everything right. Yahoo have four marketing executives emplyed just to make sure that the correct advertisements are placed in the correct places... Thats how important it is.

I had it on a cycling club's website before. Had 75-79 visits in the two weeks I had it there and got €23.27 from it. Although I spent about two weeks trying to get everything working right, and I was peeved off when I had to take the ads down.

Boards does quite well from adsense, actually - but having 15-20m page impressions a month helps. Shame about the dollar though.

But as Blacknight says, if you spend a long time working on your sites and put a large amount of effort into commercialising and promoting them as best you can, you'll reap some results.

    Tell me about it :(

Of course you can put your payment on hold if you want to, but since nobody knows if / when the dollar will rise in value, there's not much point

They don't need to be "commercial" to do well on adsense. A lot of the top earners in Ireland don't run overtly commercial sites. They have lots of quality content and good placement.

It suits me in a small way in one way, but it just screws me over in the big advertising way.

Bought about five domains for $10, so that was cheap enough at €6.38, but when I actually design the websites, and put on ads, the return will be less. A pain the arse really. Been so long now since I used Adsense and I have about 24 euro on it to claim.

Indeed. And forgetting about placement in a single page for a minute, If you put it across your 404 pages and the likes across the whole site, users will see them quite often. Of course, thats no excuse to have dead links around the site, but it does rake in it's own bit of cash.

IIRC isn't there a clause within the adsense contract prohibiting you from discussing your account &/or money earned?

They changed it a while back

You can talk in general terms about your earnings eg. I earned X last month

You cannot talk about specifics ie. CTR, CPM etc

    I get about 30 unique hits a day. I roughly get €5 a month.

Thinking of taking the ads down.

I dont get many hits a day on my site. I havent put enough effort into it yet. I aint making a load of money at it so far butI believe it can make you a fair amout of money if you have a lot of visits and you have the adds positioned well. I really have to improve my site. It is possible though. Personally it was a great feeling for me when I made my first few cents from adsense. I was making money while I slept even though it was pittance.

I have 200+ unique hits a day from about 4 of my own websites....

And usually an average of $0.00 a day!! Pretty poor, but I don't like to use a invasive method to get people to click them. For me, it was never a money spinner and by the looks of it never will be. There are plenty of websites that are dedicated to just google ads. Fair play if you can make a living out of it, now and again its a nice bit of money on the side but takes a long time to build up! I've been with Adwords for 2+ years!!

To the OP, I'd place the ads beside each title of the item. At least all your keywords are in place and the correct ads are being displayed.
