    Hi all

I've only recently been (self) diagnosed with social anxiety. I'm 26 and have had it for as long as I can remember but never actually thought there was anything wrong with me apart from being excessively shy in certain social situations.

I'm determined to beat it and CBT seems to be the best way. Can someone please recommend help for me in the Galway City area? I'll probably visit my GP first but wouold like to know what's available in the area anyway.

    Many thanks,
    m

To be honest I think you might be best off just going to your GP anyway. From my experience they'll refer you to a cognitive behavioural therapist and it's easier that way.

This was a few years ago so things may have changed now but the GP should refer you to a recognised CB therapist and discuss other options or even just the process. Have you got a good, understanding GP? That can be half the battle sometimes.

Maybe some other boardies have some experience of CBT in the Galway area and can let you know the drill.

if your GP doesn't know or is unsympathetic, try the two professional bodies for CBT:

Does anyone want to meet in Galway to discuss their social anxiety.

I have met with CBT specialists in Galway - Norman Warden in Furbo etc.

It takes 3 sessions for these well meaning people to understand the nature of the condition and three more to draw up plans.

If I was made of money that would be ideal.

Any interest in a meet up in Galway? :)

Happy Monday, feel free to start a seperate thread about a meet up or a beers or whatever if you like. Set up a poll perhaps and see how many people would be interested. Not in Galway myself but there may be a good few others who are.

I know there's a guy in Salthill that was recommended to someone i know and they found him very good, i'll find out who tho, sorry i cant think of his name right now!

There's an interesting programme launched in NUIG (I dony know if youre in college) called Beating the Blues which is online CBT, it's a pilot scheme but you could have look. Bit cheesy i'll admit but has helped some people I know.

The second organisation lists CBT specialists working in the HSE. There are a few in the Galway area and they are free.

The first is a British organisation, scroll down to Republic of Ireland.

Both list only properly trained and accredited CBT people - they all have professional mental health qualification and the trained in CBT.

There is NO statutory regulation of counsellors and psychotherapists in Ireland and many claim to do CBT having read a book about it, or done a weekend course. That's why I put up the 2 lead organisations.

Hi Dm18 just reading your post if you do suffer for social phobia you could try hynotherapy it can be quite effective.Social phobia from experience as a sufferer not as much anymore ,is a learned behaviour and definatedly can be unlearned I'm geting there slowly but surely .I know i am in a different place now than what i once was but definately this is an extremely common problem for people and quite normal beleive it or not.

This therapist is based in Galway city, and she deals with phobias and anxiety issues, amongst a dozen or so other issues. I stumbled across her site after I found this thread via google.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but does anyway know if these meetings still take place in Knocknacarra Church or if there are similar support groups in Galway for people suffering from social anxiety and phobia? I am no longer able to cope with my symptoms and am desperate for help and support, as much as the idea terrifies me, I know that rationally I need to face my fears and help myself.

I'm also looking for therapist but may just find a referral for this through GP (I'm a med card patient so hopefully entitled to it free of charge or at a lower rate).

    I have been reseaching this too for a friend (for a similar symtoms to yourself), and I agree think it may be best to consult your GP first, but a full listing of centres in Galway can be found on;

    http://www.holisto.com/local.php?county=Galway

The very best of luck to you.
