I'm trying to set up gear outside using a generator, has anyone here done this before or do any of you know if using a generator to power the equipment (decks, amp, speakers) if this could damage / blow the equipment??

    Cheers

If it's a properly regulated generator and you don't overload it, it should be safe.

Just be very careful and make sure you have an electrician with you to check the output. I blew the input transformer in a Crown Macrotech from a dodgy jenny hired by a venue a few years ago. (I have since got my own ). I would never trust any welder / gen set from a hire shop as these are regularly cranked up to well over 240V for maximum penetration on welding jobs.

I would recommend using a good UPS or power conditioner using a jenny. I use a Furman power conditioning unit, this will bring any excess voltage back to 220and will also stabilize the current and stop any buzz. Gennys also have a habit of blowing disco lamps so I would advise you not to use any expensive MSD bulbs or lasers.

Most hire shops will not hire you a generator if you mention thats its for stage only use because they do not want to get involved in any liability issues.
