Have you got a utility/recovery CD that would have come with the PC ? That would probably have the graphics driver that seems to be missing . What PCI card have you got in the machine - sound card ? Whatever it is , you should have a CD that came with it . What USB device is attached ? The drivers are missing for that too so the same as PCI applies .

If a self or custom build and you dont have driver CDs you'll need to identify and locate the appropriate drivers for your OS .

I usually use PC Wizard to identify component parts - it's available free here ... http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

Once you know what devices need drivers Google is your friend - but always look first in the support area of the manufacturer's website .

I dont understand what you mean when you say the speakers are not attached to the PC and are not working ...

Sorry i should have said this in the 1st post.

This machine was a vista PC but i installed XP on it... mainly cos it only have half a gig of ram !

I'll try the PC wizard, Cos i dont think they drivers will be on my disk.

The USB was a printer,, I just unpluged it,, also a mouse..

sorry what i meant by not attached is they are not connected to the monitor.. they are just sitting on the desk.. they are connected into the tower tho.. and power supply.

But there is no sound at all out of them.. and when i try to play music on media player i get this error.
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound

device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by
another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

find out what sound card you have, probably by going to the manufacturers site, download the drivers for the card and hey presto;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,963 ✭✭✭DenMan

Definitely a driver problem. What you could do aside from finding your driver cd (I know I have misplaced so many over the years, but when I need them they seem to turn up). If you have a mate who has a vista installed machine hook up your speakers to it and vista will find the drivers. Back them up and install them on XP machine. Hope this helps. If not go to the manufacturers website, their drivers will be uploaded. Good luck.

a simple solution to your problem is that some copys of win xp usually home edition dont have service pack integrated into them and bec of this the realtek on board audio drivers never work so you could try installing s/p 2 and restarting or go to realtek site and download drivers for audio to suit your motherboard

the windows i had has sp2 and before i did anything i check for all updates.
Also before posting i did the realtek thing and installed it..

ok so another way is to go to control panel and uninstall the audio drivers also go to the comon files and make sure there is nothing in the folders after you do the uninstall .
restart your machine and reinstall the drivers again hopefully that will work

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,256 ✭✭✭✭Standard Toaster

You'll need this Microsoft update so:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835221

That's the PCI device you see.

You maye need to re-install the realtek drivers again after.

    Edit:
Grab it from the HP site

stupid question but have you installed winrar archiver so you can extract the files

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,256 ✭✭✭✭Standard Toaster

Will PC wizard give info on your display too?
    That needs drivers there too.

For the HP download, run it and go to C:\SWSetup\SP33867\Disk1 and run the setup.exe
