Crack in Gable Wall - WHY?

I'm trying to figure if or how I have a vertical crack in the gable of our 1975 2 story semi. It's at the open end or our house, about 10 feet(3M) long. It seems to stop about 18 inches off the ground, and 2 feet below the upstairs window and is widest in the middle. The crack is nearly at the highest point of the house. The wall is pebble dashed, and I can only see one other tiny hairline crack in the side, and no cracks in the back. It does get some wind/rain, and apparently they didn't put any waterproofing in that cement when they built :-(.

The only major work was an attic extension(Well above this level). Lightning could hardly get at the wall there. The best part of the house is the brickwork - the blocks are impossible to drill and the builder used a lot of solid ones. I'm nervous of ripping off the pebble dashing to see if the blocks are cracked in case I open things up worse. The crack doesn't appear new, but it's not that old either. There was electrical work done and conduit was fastened a few inches away. It would surely have been noticed then (10 years back). Any ideas?
