3G iPhone

Ok, so come Monday we are most likely to have a 3G iPhone...

So what are people expecting from it? 3G obviously, GPS? Cheaper? Longer Battery? Smaller form-factor?

Also, how much would you be willing to pay for the perfect iPhone, one which improves on every way than the original?

I'd put a price-tag of €300 on it if it was good enough.

€300 as well but it would have to be available on Pay as You Go with a decent data add on. Or sim free direct from Apple. Also a better camera than the last one had, and a keyboard where I don't end up mashing several keys when I try to text (and no, my fingers are not fat, the keys are small :p)

a 3mp camera on the back with IS and flash would be nice... as well as zoom capabilities with a smaller camera on the face of it for video conferencing...

the ability to send MMS would be nice too...

that's kind of all i need, bar the obvious stuff. as i said in the thread over on PMP, my brother's off to america soon so i can get one fairly handy... if it's good, and unlockable :)

3g sim free with a usable headphone jack please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭johnk123

I'd like all of the above, plus...... 32GB! But i would pay more for that though. Also, a fair and decent contract from the carrier in ireland. Or, i'll just get one and unlock it. Either way i want one!

What is wrong with the current one? I don't have an iPhone btw

potential info on iphone in terms of the shape and what i asked for - a camera on the front!

It looks like Apple is changing its distribution model - allowing multiple carriers, and possible subsidies. Hopefully you'll be able to buy them unlocked from Apple too...

except they can't do that now as they are still well within the various exclusive agreementsthey signed with carriers like O2.

    Subsidies - yes.
    Multiple Carriers - no.

Multiple carriers have been confirmed for some territories. We may not see it in UK/Ireland for a while yet though.

Yep, ridiculous. One of the reasons I don't have one. That and the price and everything else I mentioned above, plus a few other reasons. The original iPhone was a piece of ****, to put it mildly. But I think the idea has great potential and I'm excited to see what the new one brings.

Regarding the exclusivity deals in the UK/Ireland/US etc...

Is it possible that there is some loophole in these contracts that mean they only apply to the old 2.5G iPhone meaning that the 3G iPhone will be considering a new product and will not be tied to these deals? Just a thought.

Also there are rumours of multiple iPhones being brought out with the differences in them not being related to storage size. So they could bring out a new look 32G 2.5G iPhone, and also a completely new 3G iPhone (16gigs and 32gig). This would allow them to full fill there exclusivity contracts with there current providers while offering the new device to any carrier.

Aside from that I would say definite support for MMS, there will be some demos of new 3rd party apps, hopefully some copy and paste implementation, upgraded camera, and a proper headphone jack(not recessed).

    a EUR 300, SIM free 3G iPhone? That's a little optimistic.

I'd love to see one for that price but I can't see it happening. Most of the other smartphones cost more than that and Apple products hardly aim to have the lowest price points.

You're right, I like being optimistic :D And tbh I wouldn't mind shelling out a little more upfront. But Apple have gone about it the wrong way for me - low upfront price and presumably the same high priced contracts. I realize students aren't really their target market with this thing but considering how quickly we snap up Macs it's a market I think they should consider if they're really going for sales volume.

Although with the same rubbish features I still wouldn't buy one at present. Pity Nokia can't design a more aesthetic smartphone.

Wow, I feel like such an Apple basher - really, I'm not! :p

The Irish Times recently suggested that Apple were moving away from the revenue sharing deals of the past so we may see contract prices go down. Besides, as the huge gulf between the O2 UK and O2 Ireland contracts showed, it's not Apple that's to blame for stupidly-high prices in Ireland.

Let's hope so. And no, I agree (although they're getting a nice cut of the revenue), but the bottom line for the consumer is that it's still not an attractive buy.

$199 is the 'worldwide' price for the 8gb version, so it should come in at about 125 euro, going by non-apple exchange rates. Any word on O2 prices?

I'd imagine they will. Probably expect to see it retailing for 100 euro more than the touch...

Yep and still a crappy amount of minutes and texts and still a charge for voicemail, and still no visual voicemail.

Thats a joke!! Apple shouldn't even allow o2 to sell it if Visual Voicemail isn't available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,175 ✭✭✭srdb20

There is no way there should still be a data cap of 1GB, not with 3G..

I could understand it with an EDGE network because it can become saturated and effect calls etc but with 3G this shouldn't be the case, unless the have a sub par 3G network, unfortunately i dont know enough about o2's network to comment, but man am i pi$$ed.

So i will be buying one of these in Belfast and popping my sim into it:D

not if you buy a o2 uk pay as you go iphone in NI.

The 8GB iPhone 3G will cost just €49 on the €100 monthly iPhone tariff, €99 on the €65 tariff and €169 on the €45 tariff. The 16GB iPhone 3G will cost €129 on the €100 monthly tariff option, €169 on the €65 tariff and €229 on the €45 tariff. All iPhone tariffs include anytime minutes, texts and a 1GB data bundle.

    not cheap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

Cheaper maybe! So who is getting one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 938 ✭✭✭blah

I'm 9 months through my £35 contract with an 8GB iphone 1st gen here in the UK. I've pretty sure that in a couple of months I'm going to get myself a 16GB 2nd gen for £159 and my 18 month contract will be renewed from then. Then I can give my existing iphone to my girlfriend, and she'll be able to get a PAYG SIM from O2 and use it in that phone. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭Sonderval

This 1 gb data cap is scandalous.

I am convinced there is an agreement between the mobile operators here about keeping the prices roughly inline and fixed.

Time to call the competition authority :/

I am tempted to get the new 3G iphone. Bitbuzz http://www.bitbuzz.com/locations/ are offering free internet access to irish iphone users for 2 years. I read this in todays Irish Times.

But i also read that O2 do not have a 3G network, they use an Edge network ( read this in the paper too) ---- does this mean that the iphone 3G is not really going to be a 3G phone ? what does this mean?

you need to re-read the article. bitbuzzs deal was announced the say after launch by O2, not much good to most people unless you spend all day in the pub.

You didn't read that O2 don't have 3G network, you read that it is the only one to have an edge network. It also has a 3G network.

    One more question.

First of all i am a text person. 98% for me is text and 2% calls. I have seen the way texting is done on an iphone. I would like to know is there a text person ( like me) that had as iphone and how do you like this way of texting on the iphone? Is it better than phones you have had in the past or is it crap? Usually i can type long messages ( i refuse to use text short words) , what is it like tying long messages?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

1GB for data is ridiculous when you see the unlimited plan in the UK - what possible explanation could they have for it? Still though, the phone alone tempts me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,230 ✭✭✭Breezer

OK, I'm gonna admit to giving this more thought over the last few days. I'm gonna be buying a decent, small, dedicated camera anyway, and I'm not into video chat, so that doesn't worry me. What still worries me is the price, so I'm going to look into buying a Pay as You Go one up North, unlocking it and using it on Meteor bill pay with free Meteor to Meteor texts and the unlimited data add on (coming in at €50 a month, which is pricey but you get a lot more than O2 offer). Though I may wait till Meteor get their 3G network up and running properly. Who knows, by then Vodafone may carry the iPhone here and there'll be a bit of competition, driving prices down.

If Skype appears in the app store that'd be a major bonus too.

It's a tough call, oh, i am not looking for a reply to this message , i am just thinking out loud, although some advice would not go astray ---- I am looking into the iPhone option right now because my 2 year old phones battery to starting to go downhill. I may get another six months out of my phone before the battery drives me bananas, but i am looking at other phones right now too, (not just the iPhone) so that i will not be caught with my trousers down when my phone battery gives up and go out and buy a stupid phone i end up hating.

I really would love the iPhone ( who wouldn't ) -- But do i need it?
I don't care about the 2 mega pixel camera ---- I have a good camera
I don't really care about the iPod ---- I love my november 2006 5th gen ipod.

But GPS is the big winner for me--- i reckon this is the top reason
    Mobile me is good too
    The App store is good
In September they are going to have some sort of server in the clouds for Apps and this will help battery power for your iphone --- Sorry i may not have explained this well
But it is a top reason too.
    3G --- a good reason too.

Two days ago i was 40% likely to buy the new iPhone 3G. Now i am 90%. Will i get it on july 11th or will i wait till my phone battery gives up. This could be 6 months down the road, around macworld time, and it would be silly to buy it leading up to macworld.

None of those shops are apple or AT&T shops, I would imagine. Apple themselves don't allow the sale of phones sim-free, and looking on ebay the prices haven't dropped to reasonable levels yet. If it is really sim-free then yes, it'll work anywhere in world with any sim, but expect to pay a premium if ebay is anything to go by.

No you can't. Social Security Number, Credit card and utility bill from the US before they'll even give you a ticket to get in the queue. In Florida anyway, and I'm just back. The guy in the Applestore at least got a good laugh when I asked if there was any chance........:D
