A neighbour of mine is planing to get a Wii and I was wondering can we set up a local network to play against eachother or is it nessesary to go through the internet?

I have a spare wireless switch that I can use.

As far as I am aware, internet games need to connect through Nintendo's servers.

I believe that there are a small number of games that support WLan play..
If you're that close together, couldn't you share an internet connection, just while you want to play each other?
