Actually another search came up with this and it can be done for free.:)
i've also posted the following in the 'problems' forum, just to make sure people see it:

i know i maybe repeating what others have already stated, but because i am not a computer programmer, and i can't be bothered following a dozen links, i have compiled a step-by-step approach for the lay person to removing that annoying o2 symbol from my viewty, using procedures from other forum members and a link - this is all you need to remove that logo in one place.

first, follow the following steps (from MiniBlueDragon off this forum):
Check that your phone is in 'Data Service' mode:-
    1. Hit the icon with four dots.
    2. Hit the bottom 'cog' icon.
    3. Hit 'Phone Settings'
    4. Hit 'Connectivity'
    5. Hit 'USB Connection Mode'
    6. Select 'Data Service'
    7. Choose 'Select' (It should say 'Saved')
    8. Keep hitting the backward arrow button to return to your main screen.

Find out what COM port your phone is using:-
    1. Plug your phone into your USB Cable.
    2. Go into 'Control Panel' on Windows.
    3. Choose 'System Properties'
    4. Choose 'Hardware'
    5. Choose 'Device Manager'
    6. Look under the 'Ports (COM & LPT)' branch and find 'LGE Mobile USB Serial Port (COMx)
    7. COMx is the port your phone is connecting under

    note: the'x' will be a number - my phone's was '9'

then follow the steps in this link:

    http://www.nivelouk.co.uk/2007/12/how-t ... ku990.html

note: one step missing in this link is that 'IDLE' is found in the 'common' folder.

Otherwise, this is all you need. hope this help...
