Can anyone recommend an easy to set up Wiki editor for a small company intranet? It needs to be free and support images.

    MediaWiki is probably the most popular (runs Wikipedia) but I've been using DokuWiki lately. It certainly works well with images -- you upload and it's easy to include the image in a page.

    I can't understand how to set DocuWiki up. Instructions say to open install.php in a browser and follow the steps, but that file is just gobbledygook.

    Are you extracting the package to your web server's path, such as (for Apache under Linux) /var/www/htdocs/wiki/ or C:\inetpub (I think this is the default for IIS)?

    If you're seeing seemingly meaningless writing on the screen, like "<?php" and "$names", then this is the case.

    Yeah, I only want to install it locally on my own machine. I have an apache server running on it, but I'm not sure if that's of any use. I tried Wamp5 also, but when I tried to open the .php file on localhost it gave a blank page - port 80 is dedicated to (I think) IIS and I have 8080 assigned to apache/bugzilla.

    Might be best to stick with the native install of Apache as opposed to WAMP (just to stop them messing with each other). Have you installed PHP and configured Apache to work with it? You can try by dropping a file, say phpinfo.php, into the web root containing:
<?php
    phpinfo();
    ?>
This is basic and you probably already know about it, but you need to make sure your web server is properly configured before trying to rule out other problems.

    Tried to install TWiki on a Windows box in work recently, wasted a day at it and it was a nightmare ...

    Then tried to install latest version of MoinMoin and it was a dream to install in under 1 hour, I have had no trouble with it, only thing was I couldnt get the fastcgi thing working, buts its still quick enough. It works off flat text files, so you'll only need to install apache and python along with it. Has been a dream to use so far!

    wikidot.com offers to host wiki's on their own site, which takes away the headache of setting a wiki up yourself. And they say that you can permission it so that the public won't have access. That said, if you want to put up very sensitive information, you may not be happy storing it on their servers and data-bases. I wonder what is to stop one of their data-base admin guys taking a look at your data.

    Anyway, to see what a wikidot.com wiki can like like in action, have a look at the site BigWiki.biz is hosted by wikidot.com, though inspite of its name it seems that it is certainly not big yet. Also it claims to offer free advertising, ( http://bigwiki.biz/help:free-advertising ) which makes me concerned that it will just be full of comporate b.s.
