Have you tried the beta snapshot of OpenOffice for the Mac? It integrates a lot better (no X11) and has the Aqua interface.

I've used OpenOffice for a good while now but iWork has grown on me. It would probably substitute for MS Office in most cases, particularly for typical users.

How about GoogleDocs I guess it depends on your usage but for most of my needs it's great. The version control + collaboration + access to your documents from ANY internet connected computer far outweights the missing MS Office features . And it's free. Having said that, MS Office is a pretty good piece of software.

    NeoOffice.

Based on OpenOffice but so much smoother.

X11 for Mac OS X is an implementation of the X Window System that makes it possible to run X11-based applications in Mac OS X.

Microsoft Office would be your best option. I bought 08 as soon as it was released and am very happy with it.

I'm glad they didn't implement the "ribbon" interface from Office 2007 for Windows as it is terrible

I tried Openoffice once and it was absolutely terrible.

If it is for home use you can get the Home/Student edition with 3 licences for around 140euro

A lot depends on if the created files will be accessed on Windows too.

iWork, for all its positives, falls down in this area. Files exported as .doc often have formatting issues when opened with Word.

    +1

If you're going to have to share your documents with Windows users, and have no access to a Windows version of Office, go with Office 08. If you're just going to be doing up letters, reports, presentations, etc. and printing them/presenting them on a Mac, go with iWork.

Personally I use iWork and when I need to be 100% compatible I virtualize Office 2003. I'm gonna have to upgrade this eventually as the world moves on to newer software, and it'll be a choice between Office 2007 or 2008. I'm dreading that because I hate Office 2007, but the whole reason I'd be buying it is for Windows compatibility. But for the moment I'm good.

I actually try to use google Docs for most things.

I do have office 2008 though as well ... and I was a fan of OpenOffice however with some things the formatting was just screwed up ... more a problem of Office's I'd say ... than of OpenOffice.

I've not used iWorks so I can't really say for that one. I do however know a few other people who have iWorks ad Office .. Office because they need it for work related stuff. iWorks for personal stuff.

iWorks integrates nicely into Leopard. And it looks like a Mac product. It's prettier than Word. I've only started using it so I can't really say if it's better than Microsoft's product though.
