Can holidays count as notice period?

    I'm handing in my notice (4 weeks), but have 3 weeks holidays booked during that time. Q) Is it possible to count these holidays as part of my notice, provided my employer deducts me the difference owed from my entitlement??

    Only at your employers discretion. They have the final say.

    I know in most places it works on a pro-rata basis...

    By the time you have left you will have worked 6 months of the year let say, therefore during that period you were entitled to half of your holidays.

    If you use more than the 'pro-rata', then you might actually own them days/money will be deducted from your last pay...

    Check with them to make sure, but this could well be the case.

    That's what I thought would happen. I suppose that worst case scenario, I have to work an extra weeks' notice. I don't mind being deducted the pay.

    No, worst case scenario your employer will say you can't take your holidays.

    It is up to the employer when you can take your holidays. Most people don't realise this. They are being "nice" by letting you take your holidays when you want.

    They probably want you to train in your replacement during your final month, so it's likely they won't let you take your holidays. (You'll simply get paid for them when you leave.)

    If your holidays are paid for, and you don't mind not getting them as a reference... sure.

    i got paid holidays i was due and bonus.

    The last job I left let me take holidays & paid me for the days that remained. Some companies are good about it, some not so good..

    And some are just glad to see the back of you.

    OP, ask your employer. Most likely they will prefer you take any time off after you leave, but be happy to pay you in lieu of any leave you are due.

    also depends on where you are going for a new job....certain types of jobs (e.g. sales) people are often given gardening leave for the period of work (to prevent them taking customers with them and trading information if going to a competitior)

    just beware the pro-rata cost of your holiday - you could end up with very little pay if you have already had some days off this year
