Teaching subjects with Engineering Degree

    Hi guys,

I am having a problem with the teaching council at the moment (aside from the fact that they don't reply to emails or answer their phone!). I hold an Hons degree in Engineering from NUIG and I am due to start the PGDE in September. According to the PGDE booklet and the teaching coucil website a person holding a BEng from NUIG may teach Maths and Applied Maths.

However the council are now saying that I must apply for recognition to teach any subject.

According to the council web site you only have to apply for recognition if your primary degree is not listed.

Has anybody experienced this (or a similar) problem before? I would appreciate some advice as I don't feel that I should have to pay the €200+ fee to have my degree recognised when it is already listed.

    Thanks
    Derek

    Hi Derek

Did you get this sorted out? I have an even more complicated situation here. I studied for my Bachelor Engineering (Electronic) in South Africa. I have just received word back from the teaching council that my degree is not accepted for Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and I would have to study 1 year of Mathematics at Post Grad level. This is because my subjects are not labeled Mathematics for Engineers in the module outline. I don't think anyone bothered reading through the module description I sent them... :(
It is strange (actually insulting) to imply that we do not have the mathematics in an engineering degree to teach at a secondary school….
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can proceed?
I am currently studying a MEng in VLSI systems at University of Limerick, so the University I studied in South Africa is obviously not the problem!

    Help!!

    Hi annoyed83

Not really. I have received agreement as to the extra mathematics courses I would have to do to get accreditation. I cannot remember the names of the courses now, but they are offered on Undergrad level by the Open University (will take ~ 1 year and cost me approx 2 x £1600). The funny thing is that what they would be covering is stuff that I have covered already in my Engineering degree.... So basically I have currently given up trying to do the HDip in Ireland. I am planning on moving to Germany. Perhaps I will have more luck there, as Engineers are actually appreciated there...

    Good luck with your situation.

    Hi,

I posted a reply in the other thread on this subject. Have a read, if you have any question reply back. By the way, I am the other BE grad that NUIG have been telling you about.
