for me it has to be either riddles in the dark or the battle of five armies. it should be good. i am glad its being done in two parts aswell. this should allow for most things in the book. it will also be interesting to see how smaug is depicted.

I'm looking forward to it being a good movie.

Oh, and clarification, it's not being done in two parts, while it's true they're working on 2 films, The Hobbit will be the first, and the second will be an inbetween kind of film bridging the gap between The Hobbit and LOTR.

They're looking for James MacAvoy for Bilbo, apparently.

Del Toro has hinted that Ron Perlman might voice Smaug.

TBH im just hoping its a good film.

I dont have the same affilation with The Hobbit as a book as i did with LOTR. (As a trilogy, i HATE LOTR) So im a bit more relaxed about it all, plus with GDT on board it excites me a bit more.

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

I've made my feelings for McAvoy VERY clear!
James McAvoy annoys the arse off me too.. with every appearance on screen, i wanna punch him in the head.
Oh.. and die James McAvoy - my opinion hasn't changed of you since last October.

The Hobbit to me is a kid's book and I don't have any expectations as long as it is handled reasonably well. I am more interested in that inbetween movie.

basquille, why does McAvoy annoy you so much?

I thought he was superb in Inside I'm Dancing, Last King of Scotland, Atonment. Don't know what he's like personally though.

i don't think McAvoy is a bad choice to be hosest he kind of fits the way the hobbits were portrayed in the lotr movies. he just has that look about him.

Well at least the hobbit will be just one film about walking rather that 3 films about walking :)

But yeah, I expect this to be a much more entertaining film than the lord of the rings films, which tended to drag on...walking around from place to place and all, the hobbit should make for a quite a good film, plenty of events to cover and there'll be some comic relief hopefully.

    DWARVES FTW.

Hard to believe it's been over 4 years since ROTK came out.

I'm sure GDT will do a great job but I dunno, after 3 LOTR films I think I'm all Tolkiened out for the next decade at least. Finding it hard to get excited about this project. But it's still another 3 years away so maybe I'll come around closer to release.

just the fact that its a j.r.r tolkien is good enough, by the way is peter jackson making it and will it be a two-part film

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭geoffraffe

Guillermo Del Toro is directing and The Hobbit will only be 1 film. They are however making second film that film that will be a link between it and Lord of the Rings

Which version of "The Hobbit" book would people recommend purchasing? There are quite a few on Amazon.

Edit: Picked up "The Hobbit - illustrated hardback" version. Looking fwd to introducing my 4-year-old to the Hobbit world.

tbh I'd start them off with the Chronicles of Narnia at that age, in a few years move onto the Hobbit.

<groan> I could just never get to grips with The Hobbit, or the whole Lord of the Rings thing at all. All my friends loved it, but I just found it barking, daft, whatever you want to call it.

Nope. Not being done in two movies. The Hobbit adaptation will be film number one. Film two will be a film that bridges the events between The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring. Nobody but Del Toro, Jackson, Walsh and Boyens (and a few others) know what exactly will take place in the movie, but speculation is the material for the screenplay will be gathered from the appendices of Tolkien's books.
Del Toro has hinted that Ron Perlman might voice Smaug.

Del Toro stated that Perlman wont voice Smaug. It's not exactly sure what role he'll take in the film, but he should be in it somewhere.
