    Dear all,

Firstly I aint sure whether this has been covered before because I havent found it anywhere. I am currently thinking very strongly about moving to London for work because its just so hard to get work here in Ireland. I currenly work part-time (not part-time by choice) as a carpenter, fully qualified from FAS. I was just wondering what would be the best way to go about looking for jobs over in London, e.g can anyone recommend any good websites or any other methods to find work. Also do you have to have a social security number set up before you go over to the UK to work?

    Many thanks folks

You can get a temporary National Insurance number when you arrive as far as i know.
Should be sh1tloads of work in London for a chippie.
I would try and save enough cash to keep you for about a month and just go over and try and find work when you get there.

Seems to be lots of work over there at the moment. They are booming a bit with the olympics in london in 2012. Would probably need lots of carpenters for work on olympic buildings and stuff.

I recently applied all over Ireland for jobs in engineering as ive just finished my degree and there is very little here it seems. I went for an interview in London and start there next year. The company i will be working, a construction company, for are crying out for engineers and im sure whereever buildings are being built that carpenters are needed.

Not sure on any agencies over there though.

London is crying out for skilled tradesmen with English language skills at present. There is a huge building boom at the moment with the games in 2012 and various other large scale projects. The neighbours husband went over there couple months back due to lack of decent paying jobs here so im hearing this from him.Sad that it's come to this. It's a throwback to the 70's and 80's:(

Well maybe, difference is you can often get to london cheaper and quicker by plane than to cork by train so its much more connected.

I live and work in London so a couple of things I'd like to point out

I don't see a **** load of jobs in construction, yet ! The Olympic site is still being excavated/demolished, they are only coming out of the ground as we speak. So no need for loads of chippies yet.

There seams to be alot of Poles here that have left Ireland.

If you are coming over to London while it can pay well it is also expensive and in my opinion more expensive than Ireland.

On the plus side Ryanair have more flights into and out of Shannon and Knock .

Have you looked at any other areas in England? As Galway008 said London is an extremely expensive city, so be prepared to pay a similar amount of rent as Dublin but live in a shoebox...!

I'm from the North of England, and whilst it doesn't have the same buzz as London, and maybe not quite as much work, it is a whole lot cheaper to live.

England is going through a property slump at the moment, but it's not as bad as it is here in Ireland. Do some research into the areas that have been worst hit and those that are still doing well and go from there.

    Good luck!

I considered going to London as it would be good for my career. I weighed the pro's against the one single con I had and the con outweighed.
I could not listen to english people every hour of the day.. listening to the **** unconsciously flowing from their mouths

Hard to say, without knowing your industry, qualifications, aims etc.

It's pretty easy to apply for jobs in London from Ireland. This may be easier then fully moving over as you'd have a lot of logistical problems. Of course you could come over for a week bunk in a hostel and hit the pavment for jobs.

As for it being expensive, yes - if you live in the center. They have a lot of rail systems which means you could live in Birmingham and commute to central London in 2 hours.
