Macro question

    Hi All,

I've read the FAQ's on Macro, but unfortunately they don't cover my question.

Could anyone explain, without taking up too much of your time, the basic differences between the various Macro focal lengths, I've seen 60mm, 105mm and 150mm. Now I know with normal prime lenses how these lenses used at a certain distance would take pics, and I'd have a good idea of how they'd crop, I just don't have a clue how that translates into the macro world. Is it literally that the longer ones allow you to stand a little bit further back?

What sort of length would people in the know recommend for someone with a single off camera flash?

    Thanks in advance!

For macro, the longer the focal length, the longer distance you can keep from your subject. I'm not sure what the formula is, but with a 60mm you'd be physically closer to your subject than a 100mm. Longer is better if you're shooting something that spooks easily i.e. insects but not as much for stationary objects i.e. flowers.

Here's a good article I came across a while back. Might help you get closer to the answer you're seeking. http://www.zen20934.zen.co.uk/photography/Macro_Equipment.htm#Extension%20Tubes
