    Hi guys,

Finished final year in college last week and cant get a job as have no results for a few weeks. Am i entitled to go for job seekers benefit? The college will not give me a letter saying i have finished college until i get results which is in like two weeks. I could really do with money at the moment.

Any body have any ideas on whether I am eligible for benefits even though i do not have a letter saying im finished?

Why don't you get a job that doesn't require your results?

Why cant you get a job?

Apply for jobs, and get one, and just say 'results pending' [or words to that effect]

Ok well I also have holidays booked for the end of next week and Dont want to go for a job and look for a week off straight away. Also I am looking for a job in my degree area and they aint easy enough to just jump into at the moment.

I basically cant work for the next two weeks and hoping I may be able to get something as I will be getting a job as soon as I get back but at the moment I cant.

I have got a permanent job setup for next year and all but at the moment i cant work for the next few weeks.

    Cheers for the quick replies

As far as I know you aren't entitled to any benifts. I think its pretty sh*tty of you to be even asking about benifits for holiday money.

So you can either try get a casual job for the next week or wait till after your holiday.

You can sign on from the date after your last exam - call into your local social welfare office to confirm. Even if the college won't give you a letter then apply for job seekers benifit and it will be back dated. I would think the college have to give you a letter as you are finished the course. Let the social welfare officer know if they still refuse.

i knew someone would go for the moral highground.

Ok i have been in college the last five years and worked every summer and most of the academic year. I pay all my taxes and am going into a career which will see me in the high tax bracket within a few years. I have never looked for benefits and have worked my whole way through college except for the final year in which i worked my ass off last summer to earn enough to keep me through the year.

I have booked a holiday as I have not had any time off all year as my course is not a typical "lets go drinking im a student" course and i get good results which i work for.

I am not trying to be lazy with this. Its two weeks I was hoping not two months. I love the way i am able to get work but while looking for it (which i am for when i come back from holiday) I am not able to get the "job seekers benefit".

Its job seekers benifit, you wont be seeking a job until after your holiday.

What do you want a round of applause because you worked in college. So did I, I have been working since 15, and worked all the way through school and college. Including my final year. You are nothing special there.

Not your typical "lets go drinking im a student" thats good. I graduated top of my class for which I received an award for, and I done this while holding on to a job. To do this I done 12+ hour days in college, and then worked friday nights and all weekend. Again you are nothing special.

You are entitled to the job seekers benefit when you are actually looking for work which you wont be for at least two weeks, I have no problem with you claiming it then.

IMO you should have booked the holiday later in the summer.

Great for you buddy, I have been applying all year for graduate positions all year. does that count, no? Its a pity there is a slowdown in the sector. I have got great grades and still finding it hard to get to interview although my CV is good. I have had one interview and the job doesnt start till next year.

Its a couple of weeks for gods sake not a bleeding lifetime. Youd swear i want to go on it for life.

I wasn't the one trying to use my past working, college course, and grades etc to try make self sound special and deserving of some kind of special grace.

Yep enginneer is a tough sector to get a job in at the moment from what I believe, and that is a reason why I would support you getting the job seekers benifit after your holiday.

My opinion is that is pretty ****ty of you to try get benifits for holiday money. That is my opinion I'm entitled to it. I have no problem with you going on it once you come back from your holiday and you are looking and available for work.

If you can't get an interview, what makes you think you'll manage to get an interview and be offered a job in the next two weeks. Also what's stopping you from saying in the interview i have a holiday booked for next week so i wouldn't be able to start till then. Since you are just out of college they would hardly be stuck for you to start straight away.

Alan seem to have hit the nail on the head and now you're getting snotty with him. Can't you borrow the spending money off your folks or get a loan for it?

why would you be able to get job seekers benefit? you havent been working, you have been in college. job seekers benefit is for people who work full time paying full tax and for some reason lose their job so they need assistance while they find a new job. not for students who are just finished their exams and want a few quid so they can go on holidays and put off job hunting for a while, which is pretty much what you are looking to do. you are looking for the money so that you wont have to work and so that you can go on holidays and that isnt job hunting. if you were actually job hunting you wouldnt be looking at going on holidays next week, you would be trying to get a new job and worrying about a holiday at a later stage. i think you have your priorities a bit mixed up.

I agree with alanmurphy. The dole is for people who can't get a job. It isn't for people who want a bit of cash before their holiday in a few weeks.

Tesco can afford a few items being stolen everyday, so I think I'll steal my dinner tonight. It'll just be a once off, so it's ok.

    It all adds up...

I seriously meant good for you, fair play.

I will look for jobs next week but intend to start when i come back from holidays.

To be honest I dont want to get into a debate about this. If i show next week that I am applying for jobs and hopefully an interview will i be able to get jobseekers benefit?

Wouldn't bet on it, My college was supposed to get me work experience when i finished my exams and because of their procedures, i wasn't allowed to seek a job anywhere, it was all up to them. i spent 2 months living on VERY tight budget and when i looked, i was entitled to NO benefits.

My 2 cents is you don't have any options mate
