    Hi All
I am a bit confused at the moment:confused:, any advice/opinions etc would be greatly appreciated.

I have a degree and 1yr experience in an investment firm. I have recently been offered a promotion as a private client dealer. In the mean time I have also been offered a masters in Corporate finance & acc commencing in Oct 08.
    • Do I take the job and defer the masters??
    • Or accept the job, get 4 months experience as a dealer and then do the masters???
    • Is it worth doing a masters?
    Thank you

If working as a private client dealer is something which interests you, and is a hard job to get, personally I would stick with the job and get the experience.

Can you do the Masters at night?

    cheers for reply

yes it is a role I would enjoy. No, it is full - time masters.

Thinking of cfa or accounting evening course but a lot of people have mentioned a masters is very beneficial in that it broadens career prospects extensively, rather then being limited to a specific role or skill set....

OK. Personally I would stick with the job for a bit, get the experience, and save some cash.

    I'm doing a part-time masters myself. I'm 30. You have loads of time. :)

CFA would open far more doors then a masters.

What will the Masters give you in terms of being more employable in the future? If you didn't already have the chance of promotion I would have said do the Masters, but in your case I'd say go with the promotion for 12 months and then revist the Masters/further eduaction again.

Given the present employment climate, I would take the job offer. I'm doing my thesis at the moment and searching for jobs, it's pretty quiet at the moment.

Aim to do the CFA if you think you can hack it. A Masters can be worthwile if it satisfies your personal goals and employment goals.

You could always accept it and if 3/4 months down the line, the job isn't what you thought it would be, you could do the Masters.

I think that's pretty good advice.

I think the most important thing you must ask yourself is, 'Why am I pursuing this PostGraduate course?'

Usually people do a Masters to enhance their employability after a base degree, IMO. I can't see why you would take on a Masters course over a solid job offer, especially if you really like the offered job and it is taking you where you want to go.

If you feel you are lacking in qualifications, I would definitely recommend taking professional exams over a Masters course. Many people put too much emphasis on taking courses in universities. I know many people that take HR masters when the CIPD qualifications would be so much more helpful, for example.

    Oaky.

You do courses to get a job. So take the job. You can do other courses while you work. Especially at the moment. Experience is a lot harder to get then qualifications.

I guess you know what to do now....

    All the best! :)

The job sounds very interesting, start now and if you don't like it you can always go back and do the masters(btw defer the entry)
