sorry guys, didnt look to see how old the post was,

yea its advertised on the tv, but im with vodafone at home for my landline through the same eircom line, but was charged for my 11890 calls.

is it only if you are actually with eircom or was i charged wrongfully

I think its that you actually have to be with eircom. Every landline in the country is an eircom landline but vodafone would lease the line from them so while you physcially have an eircom landline your not with eircom so you would get charged for them. You can search for numbers too on 11890 website.

Never can understand how Vodafone are (supposedly) cheaper, when it's Eircom they pay the service/rental to?

    Blame deregulation.

Eircom have a lot more overheads than Vodafone when it comes to landlines etc..

Why BLAME deregulation? - you should THANK deregulation - Otherwise Eircom would be screwing you for hundreds a month for a T1 line, or telling you that 56k dial-up was all you were going to get in your neck of the woods. I'm old enough to remember (a) not being allowed to own your house phone, (b) 110 baud dial-up (c) T1 lines at thousands per month (d) getting screwed for ISDN (e) paying for data per 1k bytes both received and transmitted (f) crowding round a phone to shout quick "Happy Christmas" to family in US or Australia 'cos the entire phone call HAD to be over in a minute or two after it took bloody ages to get through via the operator and the cost was going to be a serious portion of my Dad's daily wage. (g) moving into an office in Dublin in 1987 and being told we would not get phone lines for 6 MONTHS (we met the Telecom Eireann guy in a pub and an envelope of money changed hands - we got our line about a week later).
    So - roll on deregulation!

Vodafone pay Eircom a wholesale rate for renting their lines - they make less margin on the selling on of the line to you maybe in the hopes of making it back in the fees they charge for calls to foreign countries, or getting you to sign up for Vodafone mobile etc.

Nice one, thanks .... sick of being stuck with 'national' rate numbers when I know the place is just down the road and a free call.
