A lot of beauty good salons will do it for you. You might have to make an appointment to get it done, as it has to be done by someone specifically trained to. Cost varies depending on the site, size, how many etc.

They are known most commonly to grow around the neck, under-arms etc.

To have one removed in an uncomplicated area would set you back circa €50.

Was only talking to a mate of mine about this, I ve lobbed a few off with a razor in the past but it was accidental. My mate tied string around his and cut off the blood flow and it just fell off. But dont listen to me!

I've heard of people doing this myself. But there is a higher risk of them growing back in this case. When you go and get them done at a salon they kill it at the root. Not plugging anything :pac:

Had a tiny one removed from my neck a couple of years back myself. Was quick and painless :)

how long do you need to keep the string on it and how tight like very tight?

does wart remover work on them does anybody know?

abigayle, how does the beautician kill it at the root?are you left scarred?

had a plaster on a cut near the skin tag. The sticky bit of the plaster was on the tag. When I took the plaster off, the tag was gone.

Hello there. Not to alarm you, but
skin tags can be a sign of undiagnosed
diabetes. +20 on going to the doctor ;)

Meh yourself!! ;) It's not clear how
    numerous/recurrent skin tags are for
    the OP. Safety first :)

ETA: I think your response qualifies
    as general unneeded muppetry. Let's
    see what the mods think.

Is this aimed at me? If so then i think you need to stick around PI a little longer, as you obviously don't know the meaning of the word muppetry. That's all i have to say about that.

Now lets get this back on topic....

I have one of those. never know what until now. are they harmful? I have had one for years and over time it got smaller, it doesn't really bother my, so if it's unharmfull I'll just leave it

    Hi,

just going unreg because i'm too lazy to log in.

i got 5 skin tags removed last week. I had them on my neck and under my arm. My cousin is a doctor so she got a sterile kit. It was very easy and you could probably get someone to do it for you.

Importantly, only skin tags that are small at the base can be removed like this. bigger skin , as in skin tags with a wide base, will probably need a stich after removal.

    Heres how it happened.

My skin was wiped with an alcohol swab. A tweezer pulled it tight then a very sharp sterile scissor cut it off at the base. It just hurt like a small pinch. Easy. The sore bit was the brown disinfectant used on the cut afterwards!!

    Job Done.

I've only spotted this now, sorry! Well when I got mine removed she popped me up on one of the beds and brought over her light. After examining it, she used this stuff that froze the tag. Because it was on my neck, I couldnt see everything she did - but I think she nipped it off with something. She told me that the site would be a little red for a few days, but said it wouldnt scar or return. In the unlikely event that it did return she told me come back and she would sort it out without charge, this would only happen in the scenario where she didnt get the whole thing.

It never did come back, and Im delighted its gone. It small, but still visible of you tied up your hair, so it bugged me a little.

If you go to a reputable place, they will be able to have a look at it for you and give you the best possible advice.

When I asked her what caused them, she said ageing and weight fluctuations are to blame.

    Where is your one OP?

my docs told me to tie some thread on tightly and wait for the tag to fall of. the thread cuts off the blood supply

I have a big one on my shoulder that my family lovingly named "my cocopop". I'm terrifed to go near it because they told me when I was a kid that if its pulled off you bleed to death

Hi guys, was delighted to find this thread. I have a really big one on my bottom. When I say big i mean it would nearly need its own passport if it travelled. It also seems to have layers to it. It started off the size of a rice crispy but has grown steadily over the years. I'd say its now the size of a grape. I am too embarrassed to go to the doc so was thinking about the thread technique, the root is quite narrow. Has anyone tried the thread on one this big?

I snipped one off with a scissors when I was a teenager and since I'm typing today, I didn't bleed to death :) It was a normal amount of pain for that size cut, but did bleed a lot due to the scissor hacking :P, but healed within 3 days, no scarring. Got others taken off with liquid nitrogen at my GPs, quick and only dull pain after for an hour or so, no scarring there either.

I have a lot because I have PCOS, hormones can affect them too. Long story short though, they're fine unless you have tons of them and have no condition that'd explain them (go to your gp in that case) or are painful or getting caught in hair/clothes.

Sorry to be so dumb but whats a skin tag ?

I'm 31 and never heard of them before!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 424 ✭✭meganj

I had one near on the corner of my left eye, i actually just twisted it off one day...

But the string thing works as well! If you don't feel capable of doing it though go to the doctor!

Never heard of a beautician doing it but if so fantastic!

They're what it says on the tin, they're like tiny flaps of skin that look like tages, and usually find them under arms, or on thighs, or near eyes in my case! Nothing to worry about... although as someone has already said can be a sign of undiagnosed diabetes!

I had about 6 done one day, unfortunately i had to get them done in theatre as there was one or 2 big ones under my arm, on my neck and on my back. However i have a few more to get removed under my arm, and they will be done by my GP when i get around to being not so lazy...... It is quick and painless, and the only problem is the iodine after makes you look like an oompa loompa

Skin tags are often a symptom of PCOS in women. In men they are often a sign of insulin resistance. I would get to my GP and get tested. Bear in mind insulin resistance occurs before diabetes so if your sugars are normal that does not mean you are all grand. There is tons of info on insulin resistance on the web and in books. Due to high sugar and refined carb diets it is sadly becoming very common.

I get occasional small ones round the neck when I wear necklaces - Im a bit of a picker so I tend to nip them off with a nail clippers while they are still only 1mm big. Alternatively I twist them off - they do tend to bleed a good bit but I must emphasise I have only ever taken off tiny ones myself.
I also get occasional small ones around bra strap line or close to underarm - its from friction in my case.

A friend had a rice crispie sized one on the neck for a few years and her hair kept catching in it - her doc recommended the string treatment and it worked a treat - it swelled up initially (blood couldnt get back out of it properly) and then dried up and fell off in less than a week.

My BF gets lots of them, he goes to a consultant periodically to get them lasered off - he is too squeamish to try the string treatment or the nail clippers.

For the person with the grape sized one on their bottom - Id check with a GP before trying the string treatment, with something that size you dont want it to swell and accidently burst when you sit on it - you know?

skin tags can also be quite safe if a little bothersome. The most common areas is on neck, braline or anywhere where there is a "rubbing of clothes" or friction. It doesn't have to be diabetes.

I had a number of skin tags under my arm pits removed by a dermatologist last year. He froze them off. The brief procedure wasn't sore nor painful.

    Don't attempt doing it yourself.

I also encourage the gp route, I had one and he had it gone in about 2 mins, tiny bit of bleeding and out of there
