I have a client who sends me zip files from time to time. These zips were created on a Mac and they unzip ok, but always appear to have an extra .build folder with a complete copy of everything that's in the zip file. I just delete this folder, but I'm interested in what it is and where it comes from - I assume it's some of Mac 'hidden' folder that somehow gets zipped up? Can any Macheads tell me more about this?

. (dot) files are unix hidden files, there's usually one created for every file in an archive, folder etc.

they are just backups in case the original files get corupt or accidently deleted.

Apple use a two fork file structure thats why there is no filename extension used. One part contained data, other contained resources ( icons, associated application, etc). This format was maintained in the migration to UNIX (resource part is now a hidden or . file). Copying to PC and back to Mac could lose the resource info which usually does not cause a problem ( unless the specific app is looking for the info) .

    This explains it better.
