'The Wire' is leading (along with the not-quite-as-excellent "Mad Men") in this year's Television Critics Awards. It's nominated in:

    PROGRAM OF THE YEAR

    "John Adams" (HBO)
    "Lost" (ABC)
    "Mad Men" (AMC)
    "Ken Burns' The War" (PBS)
    "The Wire" (HBO)

    OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN DRAMA

    "Damages" (FX)
    "Friday Night Lights" (NBC)
    "Lost" (ABC)
    "Mad Men" (AMC)
    "The Wire" (HBO)

    INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT IN DRAMA

    Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights")
    Glenn Close ("Damages")
    Paul Giamatti ("John Adams")
    Jon Hamm ("Mad Men")
    David Simon ("The Wire")

    HERITAGE AWARD

    "M*A*S*H" ( CBS)
    "Roots" (ABC)
    "Saturday Night Live" (NBC)
    "Sesame Street" (PBS)
    "The Wire" (HBO)

The last two are particularly interesting - Simon is in the "Achievement in Drama" award alongside four actors. I think it's great that it's Simon being recognised here as he, more than anyone else (well maybe Ed Burns) is responsible for the show.

The "Heritage Award" is the most interesting though - it celebrates shows that have had a significant effect on the TV landscape. It's alongside some very famous shows and it's great to see it in such famous company. Whereas the show gets disgustingly overlooked by other award ceremonies, it's good to see the people whose job it is to know good TV, recognising the show.
