    Hey guys,

Last time I needed help here you were great so Im back now for more advice!

I currently have a Yamaha Pacifica which has done brilliantly for me but Im looking for a more powerful, professional guitar to help me advance as a guitar player.

Im looking to spend about 300 maybe a bit more if its an essential. Im looking for an electric. I play mostly arctic monkeys, pigeon detectives, strokes etc. so no need for the heavy metal ones.

Any advice greatly appreciated as always! Thanks.

since you have an already capable guitar and a limited budget maybe you should consider upgrading pickups or some other hardware instead of buying a whole new guitfiddle. It's just that your budget will only be getting you something marginally better than your current guitar, and i'm not sure whether it's worth it, it might be worth your while saving some more cash and getting something that would truly be an upgrade.

I see, and what exactly can you upgrade on a guitar? Completely useless when it comes to that. The pickup or something? Thanks.

EDIT: what I meant to say is in a post below.

There are two Hickeys in Galway they might do it. Give them a call.

And probably your best bet would be to upgrade your pickups, for me it's a DIY job, It's really not that difficult, but if you're not up to doing it yourself i know some guitar shops will do it for you. As for what pickups there are sooooo many to choose from, i'm sure some of the more knowledgeable members will have suggestions!

An epiphone would do you nicely...perhaps an sg or les paul......if you are lucky a es335 or dot

There is lots you can change, pickups, bridge, neck, tuners, not. Everything and anything. Do a bit of google research using terms like guitar mod.

Th Strokes and Arctic Monkeys are big time strat players and there are a couple of Mexican Fender Strats around your budget on adverts.ie.

If you saved up a bit more you could get a Fender Telecaster. A good few indie bands use them. Plus its uber cool. :pac:

Funnily enough, on a budget of 300 euros I'd have suggested a Yamaha Pacifica. :pac: "Professional" guitars enter in at around 4 times your budget so, being realistic, you should probably just aim at stepping up a notch on what you have. Assuming there's nothing you're finding uncomfortable about the guitar you have, blowing the whole 300 on new electronics and a good setup for your Pacifica will leave you with a much better guitar than any you would buy in that budget, so I'll +1 on the pickup suggestion (perhaps some Seymour Duncans or Lindy Fralins). Plus you could spend a grand or so on a guitar next year and still get the upgrade benefit of the pickups.

Mex fenders and Epiphones are all pretty meh guitars.

Yeah, I would agree with this suggestion.

If you buy a new guitar for €300, you will basically end up with something about the same quality as what you've got already. You could look at second-hand, but even then, your not moving much up the ladder.

Mexican Fenders are nothing to be sniffed at!

So, what are these "professional" guitars that you're talking about?

Thanks for all the help lads. Ive made my mind up and I think Im just gonna buy a few upgrades like the pickup. Just about to do a few searches now. Is there any specific pickups or are they universal for brands? Sure ill have a look now! :)

And I meant more professional, not actually professional. The amount you can spend on a guitar is crazy. Ill post back with what I found.

    Cheers.

Seymour Duncans and Di Marzios are staples. Other boutique manufacturers include Lollar and Fralin. There are also smaller companies such as Vintage Vibe and Curtis Novak making some really good stuff and not too expensive.

I own a Mex Strat and I played a Mex Jazz for a couple of years. For what they cost, they're sht. Even after I changed the pickups, the Jazz still sucked.

I'm in a similar boat as the OP, thinking of upgrading the pickups of my Pacifica. Can anyone recommend a good combination of 2 single coils and a humbucker for a guitar that will mostly be used for playing blues?
