It's just under 50% of the average industrial wage according to RTE

I could be completly wrong but I do think they have some percentage target they aim at and to be fair to FF, it's a commitment that they actually kept. That and pensions too.

Btw, you work in NI and paid tax there but you want to claim off the Irish state which you didn't pay income tax to.
I know you can do this but kinda strange don't you think.

Not being smart as I kinda did it the other way when I was paid JSA and housing allowance for a course I did in Belfast.
I was clearing about £90 a week, a fraction of what is paid here

Well I was born in Ireland and simly moved to Northen Ireland and now I decided to come home so surely I am entitled to benifit...

In Northen Ireland the dole for single person is just 60 sterling a week, that is not even 100 euros so the dole here in ireland is more than double then that in UK.

The cost of living is higher here.

Food is more expensive yes but even still the doll for single man in my opinion is very high,I was working in northen Ireland in a factory for 6 years and the pay in the doll here in Eire is not much lower,I was getting 197 sterling a week in the factory, now when I sign on here I am told will get 197 euro so that is about 150 sterling I will only be about 45 quid worse off and dont have to work...

There's too many action groups here shouting for raised welfare levels.
Also, most leaders in this country have no backbone and just give in to demands.
Another reason is that no-one seems to realise the consequence of giving welfare to all e.g. Child Benefit being made available to children outside of Ireland is costing us a lot of money.

    Don't forget rent allowance of 70e a week. 198 + 70. :)

We don't have the dole here, we've two other things I forget the name off. If you paid PRSI in the past you're enlisted to assistance which is allow more then if you never worked a day in your life. The 'dole' as you call it is a lot less then the 198 euro to mention.

Where is here? I thought you were in Ireland, yes?
My friend gets ~195 + 70 rent allowance I think.
Are you saying it is that high unless you have never worked here?

Yes. If you've paid PRSI, for a period, you're entitled to a benefit (i forget the name) which is higher then the normal 'dole'.

In my opinion 198 euro is a good amount of cash for someone not working, they have more than enough to survive.

Are you for real.Could you survive on 198 euro a week. Most people pay more than that every week on there mortgage or rent. What would you do for bills, food, transport etc....

But they don't pay their rent from that, they get the rent allowance.

My main point from all this is that the dole is not much lower than someone for example working the Min wage,I bet someone working a 40 hour week in say Mc Donalds is not earning much more than the 198 euro dole.

I am going by if the min wage is like it is in UK which i am sure it is.

isn't the minimum wage in or around 8.75 here? so that would be 350 a week minimum wage for a 40 hr week. Not a whole heap of difference, but could be the difference between being able to afford the rent/mortgage and still be able to eat or not.

Its a disgrace, guys/gals breakin their backs for €80 more than the dole + rent allowance.

Doing that work means you body needs more fuel which is an extra €30 a week or so, then you add in petrol/ transport which is another €20 or €30..

Your basically working for nothing and something like 10% of the working nation is on mimimum wage or very near it..

That is my whole point on this forum, the Min wage is not much higher than the dole.

This is gas. One group of you are saying the JB is too high, the other is saying it's too low.

I for one believe that the main problem in this country is that we are shelling out far too much money to people who are simply unwilling to work, period. I work in different locations around Dublin and in my travels, and in my job, I see rows and rows of people waiting to collect their benefits. Many of them are genuinely in need of assistance, and their plight is frightening when you look at how expensive daily life has become.

But a feware leeches who are simply unmotivated. I've spoken to them directly, and many see no reason to go back to work when they can claim cash and maybe have a cash-in-hand job. Or in alot of cases, simply do nothing.

I was on Disability for a while, as I went through a traumatic period in my life and needed time off. I received 198 per week which kept me fed, but only because I was living at home. To expect some poor unfortunate family to survive on these payments is ridiculous.

Someone mentioned child benefit being paid out to kids not in this country. What the hell??? Really? If that's true, then we really are digging our own graves.

The payments should be means tested to a reasonable level. We pay out a serious amount of tax to the government, not just through our wages but through the overpriced expeses of day to day living. Surely to God if we curbed this needless spending on individuals who show no sign of returning to work (whatever happened to cutting off these benefits?) and paid out to those who need and deserve help, then things would return to normal. God knows that unemployment is rising rapidly, and there'll be plenty more mouths to feed.

Job seekers allowance is the one you get from your PRSI and job seekers benefit is the actual dole. The Job seekers allowance is never any higher than the dole for a single person, although if you find your self out of work and eligable for blind/disability pension you can claim both until your job seekers allowance runs out. runs out.

Not true, jobseeker's benefit is from your PRSI, jobseeker's allowance is the means tested one.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The idea of 'the dole' is to allow someone to survive. Do you think it should be low enough that it slowly kills them?

Yea that is true, it's called Early Child Supplement. You get €275 every 3 months for each child under the age of 6.
