Kaspersky. Arrgh.

    Hi,

I recently installed Kaspersky AV for the first time, after using AVG for so long. I got a 6-month free licence, and everything seemed fine.

Until I started some applications. It appears to have slowed down Firefox (2 and 3 RC1), Itunes, MIRC and Thunderbird. When I sync my ipod, it takes forever to sync or not at all. So, just to see if it was KAV, I stopped the service, and itunes synced no probs, MIRC opens as quick as it used to.

So... is there an issue with the way I installed KAV, or are there some tweaks I can add to make things run smoothly.

    Cheers.

    D.

What OS and spec are you running? Not that I know the answer but someone will need that info.

    But of course. :)

    XP SP3, 2GB of RAM, P4.

Note that when KAV is stopped, everything speeds up. Its like everything has to be analysed by KAV before it runs.

Real time monitoring of all apps is bound to kill performance, can it be changed to "act only if changes are made/attempted" or something like that?

OK, this works for Kaspersky Internet Security Version 7.0... I am assuming the KAV is similar to KIS in terms of firewall settings? This also assumes that you are using the Kaspersky firewall rather than MS or some other firewall.

    1. Open Kaspersky
    2. Click firewall
    3. Click configure
    4. Under filtration system set the bar to mid point (Training Mode)
    5. Click apply (you may have to enter a password too)
    6. Click OK
    Run programme application
When Kaspersky warning pops up, check the box [ ] "rule" then "allow"
Your app should run without further KAV problems

Repeat 1-6, but change back to either low security or high security, because training mode is one way Kaspersky learns (and it will drive you crazy with pop ups if you leave it in training mode).

I typically run in high security when using IE or Firefox to surf or access boards, IM, or email, and low security to install something. Most of the time I hardly know it's there. Have used it a year and recently renewed. Would not go back to Norton, Trend-Micro, or McAfee, because of all the problems, as well as the delay in definition updates.

Have a friend that's a heavy online gamer, plus rips and burns a lot, that uses KIS 7.0, and he claims that he keeps KIS firewall on low security to avoid popups and other problems.

The only times that KIS seems to be chewing up my capacity are when:
    • bootup scan (first minute or so)
    • automatic update (which you can set to manual to avoid surprises or capacity drag)
    • something nasty online triggers it

Thanks for that, but KAV doesn't have a Firewall option.

Personally I think KAV is a pile of unmitigated poo. We had it in my last job, and the real time monitoring made some memory hogging apps almost unusable, even when we followed the directions to turn it off for certain applications. Since we'd payed for a decent amount of licenses, we got in touch with the support team, and their response was about as much use as t*ts on a bull, and with a snotty attitude to boot.

We replaced it with Nod32 and everyone was happy.

    You are wrong Stky10

Kaspersky is easily the best anti-virus program out there

    In your opinion...

When we decided to go for Kaspersky it was based on reviews I'd read on-line of different anti-virus solutions, but it was pretty much a toss up between them and Nod32. But the following year based on the problems we'd had, we changed to Nod32 and the problems disappeared instantly. The developers we had likened using Kaspersky to walking through quicksand.

And if they were really the best anti-virus solution out there, you'd see the big multinationals using them. I've worked in a few, and I haven't seen it anywhere.

Maybe Kaspersky is good for low end use on home desktops. I don't know... I don't use it anymore, and I wouldn't recommend it either.

Luckily for me, my opinion is the informed one

Not according to av-comparatives. Plus it failed this months VB100. I know that you do a lot to help people around here but I really see no need for your arrogance. If you have a more informed opinion than the rest of us, then please state your reasoning and/or sources.

Maybe you're not as informed as you think you are, especially since my experience is the same of that of the OP. Not that I've the time or the patience to debate this further with you.

@OP... try looking in the options section to see if you can take some applications out of real time monitoring and see if it makes a difference. Its not ideal, but it may be that there's one application that Kaspersky has an issue with that isn't a virus threat. Try this with applications that are taking up the most memory in task manager. Otherwise use the support part of their website to log a case with them to see if they can come up with a workaround. If that still doesn't cure the problem, either go back to AVG, or try Nod32.
