Can any one help please, My hard drive died a few weeks back & I sent it off to CDR, they returned it with all the files restored,
When I try to open a Quark file it wont let me & they look different, They are black boxes rather than the Quark icon,
Anyone know how to open them??

Currently working on Mac 10.4.11 & Quark 7.31

I haven't used Quark since version 2(!), but no matter, the questions below relate to any app...

Do the files have the correct filename extension ("filename.qxd" etc)?

When you Get Info on them, is Quark Express the app they are set to be opened with?

    Can CDR help you further?

As Type 17 said, they may have just lost their association with Quark (defaults to UNIX type icon). Quark is a complex app. and there are many ways to screw up files created with it.

Is the application itself on the broken drive? Maybe a reinstall might sort things. Before you do that first dump the Quark preferences and see does that fix your problem. Preferences are found in Hard Drive-->User-->our account-->Library-->Preferences-->Quark (just dump contents of this folder, will be recreated next time Quark runs).

The first thing to check is that the files have the .qxd extension. I have found over the years that long time mac users do not do use file extensions unless they were trading files with windows. Rather than set the finder to open all unix exec files in Xpress (ie in the get info pane) add the file extension with one file, drag and drop the icon then over Xpress and see what happens.

Let us know how you get on.
