I find my Fender Blender not so versatile (at all) so I was thinking of getting something else instead.

What do ye think of the DM4? Was talking to this guy the other night who couldnt say any bad thing about it!

    Your thoughts?

What kind of sound exactly are you looking for?

The DM4 has a lot of sounds, so if you're looking for versatility, its definitely a good choice. But if you only need one or two distorted sounds, you can usually get better sounding single pedals, for less money.

Have you a particular sound in mind?

yeah a very heavy distortion type fuzz. Blender is kool but you know when I do some lead and use more than one string, it blends all the strings together and sounds real... mushy!
I might use the rat option as well since it's got it too :)
    Expensive?

Well, im not sure that 'heavy' and 'fuzz' go together too well. Fuzz usually means a pretty soft farty sound, so its probably always going to happen that when you play chords it will sound 'mushy' as you say.

Maybe you just want a straight distortion pedal, without necessarily a fuzz sound?

    maybe. recommendation?
Before I bought the Fender Blender I was thinking of big muff or rat, more rat actually... And then I tried Blender and bought that instead. It's ok for most of it, but I find that when I use a lot of reverb on my amp it doesnt souns as good... An dI defo like to have loads of reverb on the amp. I would use it in conjunction with a blues driver pedal.

I've heard good things about the MXR Double Shot. Its got 2-channels for two different sounds which might prove handy. And MXR are built very well in my experience.

If you're after a jack-of-all trades (like the DM4), the digitech DF7 is another to consider. I don't think it would excel at any of its sounds, but if you're not sure exactly what kind of distortion you're after, its got models of Tubescreamers and ProCo and Big Muff etc. A good bit cheaper than the DM4, but with the disadvantage that you've only got one sound at a time.

EH do a metal muff, which is I guess a heavier version of the Big Muff. I havent used them or read up on them, but might be something to look into. They come in a few versions, from cheap to expensive.

Give examples of the kind of sounds you are looking for? I mean specifically songs/records which you think sound like how you might want things to sound.

No no it doesn't! Fuzz doesn't have to sound farty, but it can if you want it to. As for mushyness, I haven't found that. Just roll back the gain if you want to play a lot of chords.

I had a guy in the US build me a custom fuzz pedal, that one is called the Doom Fuzz. :D

    SP_A0054.jpg

This is my one. :) soundclip > here Keep in mind, I was using wah and delay with it, and on bass (and my playing sucks:o). So it's not that relevant...lol...

His latest one is a bit more advanced, it's called the Catastrofuzz.
I don't have the full spec list but it has a lot more on it than my 'ol one.

Check out this clip of him playing a Tele through it into a Fender Deluxe.

Ah, well it does in fairness. I don't mean farty in a derogatory way - describe it however you want (soft, fuzzy :pac:, whatever), but that's what fuzz is - its a different distinct sound as opposed to distortion.

'Roll back the gain to play chords' - sure what's the point then? She's looking for a heavy distortion that stays defined.... roll back the gain and it's no heavy or distorted any more

I recently built a BYOC Mighty Mouse (Rat Clone) and have to say it sounds quite good. There is a company called Axe and you shall receive who sell them pre-built. I have also heard good things about Freakshow Effects Brown Rabbit (another Rat clone).

The euro is quite strong against the dollar, and it seems that getting stuff sent by USPS means that they seem to start charging customs duty after a mucher higher value compared to some other courier services.

I would say though that you should consider holding onto the blender and supplementing it with the rat. I don't think that there is any one fuzz/overdrive/distortion pedal which does everything. I find the minimum I can work with is two (preferrably different flavours) of pedal and preferrably some sort of switching where you can change from one to the other without having to switch off the first and turn on the second to change sounds.

Check out the Boss OD20.....i have one....22 types of overdrive/distortion.

Having said all that i don't use her that much....i am now anti Boss because of who and what they think they are...(you're not the best Boss)

Anyway, the reason i am telling you about it is because they can be picked up fairly cheap.....weak £££ and $$$....they used to be €250 in stores here a couple of years ago.

    from the dm 4
no use for live , studio is fine .,
Sounds are decent but still a notch or two off the real deal.
i used one for a while live but there is a delay when switching over which is a bit crap as the sound drops .
    so there:eek:
