Upgrading hard drive of PS3

Comments

I haven't upgraded mine yet but will sometime this year.

An external will work fine, however, you won't be able to install demos or games on it. Its great for movies though.

Best of all, it doesn't void the warranty.

i have been planning on doing it as well. from what i read online it seems to be pretty easy. just take a backup of the current hard drive using the backup utility. replace the HDD and format using the format utility. then restore the old data using the backup utility. easy!

So can I store music and stuff on a External HD?

And can I use the one I currently use for my Laptop or would it have to be formatted?

i have a 500gb external harddrive that i use with my PC and PS3. you just need to make sure the external HDD is formatted to NTFS format. You can check this by right clicking on it and checking the properties. Most HDD's are this format.

Then when you hook the HDD up to the PS3 go to the video or music section on the PS3, select the External HDD, press Triangle and "Display All". You can then browse though the contents of the HDD.

OK i have a Western Digital Passport 120GB I didn't change any settings on it for file management.

Which File System would it be?

Guess it wouldn't be too hard to back up the HD on my desktop and then format it to NTFS Format.

Actually I think I read somewhere that while XP can use FAT32 or NTFS, windows 2000 can only use FAT32 is this true?
(I'm guessing if my External HD works with my laptop its FAT32 if this is true)

And would this mean when I changed it I would no longer be able to access the drive from my laptop?

The Ps3 cant read NTFS , thats a microsoft file system. At the moment not even the xbox reconises hard drives formated this way.

Fat32 is your only option really. Its limited to files smaller than 4gb each.

Fat 32 will work with your Pc as well

Right so FAT32 for PS3. And NTFS is a microsoft system?

What format would my current External HD be? I don't have it with me at the moment.

Most external storage comes formatted as FAT32 , so that is most likely what it is now.

something that's worth bearing in mind is that a 7200rpm drive will generate more heat than the 5400 that is currently in there. Check if the drive you're gonna buy runs hot cos if it does it could be more trouble than it's worth.
