    Hi everyone,

I'm going into 3rd BComm next yesr but don't really know a lot about the elective subjects.

Are there any subjects which are easy to do well in (ie get an A if possible) as I really need to bring my GPA up.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Tom.

Well it depend what you're specialising in. However there are two core subjects which everyone will be doing.

    They are:

    Ireland in Europe
    Strategy Formulation and Implementation

Ireland in Europe is assessed as follows:
    25% for a 5000 word essay, 75% in a final exam
It's pretty boring stuff but I got an A- in it, and I'm someone who really doesn't try that hard, so I'd guess people who put in real work got A+, very nice for the GPA.

    Strategy is assessed as follows:
Class contribution 20%, Group work on a case analysis 30%, final exam 50%
Haven't got the results back yet, but again the stuff is mind-numbing but easy to comprehend. I'd imagine it's pretty easy to score high in.

Pro-tip: When choosing your two Horizons electives, choose something like Information Studies, as they give out A grades like crazy and it's a fantastic way to bump up your GPA. Don't be like me and choose stuff you're actually interested in, as these courses love to give B and C grades.

    OP I am B.Comm 2004 - pick

    Financial Management

    &

    Reinsurance

As your two electives. Everybody gets a first (or "A") in these subjects, especially FM. Pretty much the whole year will pick FM, Reinsurance isnt that well known. I got 74% in Financial Management having only been to two lectures - the exams are the exact same every year, in fact I had actually done the exact question that came up in my exam roughly two hours before I sat the exam. I got 80% in Reinsurance, having only attended aprox 50% of the lectures.

I did not sit an elective in the first term of my 3rd year, and chose to pick two electives from the choices in term two instead. Not sure if you can still do this nowadays but you could in 2004. Hope this helps.

If you're any way technically inclined, IS programing & development was a good one. Not too tricky, introductory Java. A decent number of A's went out. Similarly my own two electives:

"Web Multimedia - An Overview" and "Intro to Computer Forensics", both CS courses. Neither of them were too tricky. The second one didn't even involve any code. I got an A in the first one (I think), and so far my provisional exam result for the second is an A+. Just don't miss the lectures in Forensics and you can pick up around 20% for a "learning journal", a hundred words or so on what you did in each lecture.

If this kind of things appeals then the MIS type stuff has a correct answer, so it is often more obvious how you get an A than in the essay type material.

Do Financail Management, guaranteed an A and Antonys classes are by far the most enjoyable of your third year.

There's a reason only five of us went for the MIS stream. It doesn't have wide appeal, but for those of us to whom it does appeal, it's great.
