    Circle line parties sound deadly.

It's a silly law tbh. Just because you can't drink on the tube doesn't mean you won't be drunk on the tube. Banning the actual physical act of drinking on the tube is going to achieve very little.

what did you get banned for

I would have assumed that actually drinking wasn't allowed previously anyway. They just caused that problem by making the change and telling someone about it, thus meaning people wanted to partake in drinking on the tube even though they never had done previously anyway or even knew that they could.

Won't make any difference to anything though.

    Drinking, probably.

Do it on the bus. The drivers will appreciate the humour.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

The piece seems rather biased to me. Banning drinking on public transport is a good idea IMO. It's not comfortable when some unsavoury or rowdy character is drinking near you and quite frankly there's no need for it. The public reaction to the news just went to prove it was the right call and that people are idiots.

    Fixed.

How would the physical act of a drunk person drinking make you any more uncomfortable than just a drunk person in general?

Technically, of course, it doesn't. Practically though, being allowed to drink tends to give people a licence to act like they are in a pub.

They should put bars on the dart or even an off license will do

A few cnuts ruining it for the many. Nothing wrong if you live in London to be heading to a night out in town and have a final tin on the way. The cnuts are the problem. Governments don't realise this. I drink plenty and have done so in a variety of places, but have never behaved in an unruly fashion and certainly have never got involved in fights etc. Basically I should be in charge of everything and MY definition of a cnut should be culled mercilessly and everyone should agree with me about everything.

Ring line parties are brilliant, there was one in berlin there in November, it was surreal! Totally legal, but the police got wind of it after a while and put a stop to it. Hopefully somebody will organise another one soon, was also at a "F*ck Yuppies" parade today too, any excuse for a street party!

Couple of these in CSI New York - on the NY Subway. Looked pretty cool! Next time a city bans such things and are having a big party I'm gonna head over for the weekend :)

One more step towards a nanny state.

Rather surprised that the drinking was allowed on the tube in the first place. Can you drink walking in the streets of London ?

dont think there was ever previously a ban on alcohol on the underground, it was just tolerated,

as for drinking on the streets, some of the boroughs have by-laws banning it, but its not a accross city/greater london ban

Got caught up in it on saturday night. It was hillarious. Very rowdy, but mostly good natured. We went about 8 stops before the driver threw everyone off the train. Of course, everone just got on the next train, which was twice as crazy.
I didn't actually know drinking was allowed on the tube until they announced the ban.

    Thx Irish-stew !

I too didn't know it was allowde until the ban, presuming that you couldn't drink on the wtreets therefore you couldn't drink on the tube. I'm not shocked by the ruling and must admit that we have enough places where we can drink without having to do so on the tube.

Yes, because of course everyone will obey the law. Smoking has been banned on the bus for ages but I bet most people here have seen some scumbag lighting up on the top of a bus.

Also, according to that law you can carry alcohol but just not open it and drink it on the tube. Does this new law include tube stations? If not you could buy a resealable bottle and run out of the tube have a swig and run back on.

The party did look awesome though. It was on the kiwi news as being the end of drinking on the tube for the circle line waitangi day pub crawl that every New Zealander in London seems to go to.

Never had problems having a can or two on the DART.

As for trains, last year me and a few mates were on a train to Cobh and had bags of drink, they didn't mind us drinking sure they even brought us new black bags when we filled up the last one and we were all on under-16 tickets.:D

It's allowed on Iarranoid Eireann trains as long as its not a match day in Croker.

I'm sure Victor will pop along to clear it up though!

I asked Iarnrod Eireann about this a few years back...

I refer to your e-mail dated 22nd November 2006 to Iarnrod Eireann Customer Information Service concerning the consumption of alcohol on board trains, which has been passed to me for attention.

While Iarnrod Eireann reserves the right to designate any train as ‘alcohol free’ in the interest of public safety and for the comfort of other passengers ,a policy that is generally invoked on occasions such as match specials ,stag/hen parties etc or where someone attempts to brings large quantities on board such as crates of beer ect & which is likely to create disturbance during the course of the rail journey for other passengers ( in these instances they can be stopped at the ticket barrier and prohibited from carrying the alcohol on board) ,in general there should not be a problem with individual passengers bringing small amounts of alcohol on board for personal consumption.

Iarnrod Eireann are currently in the process of committing substantial capital investment towards upgrading the rail infrastructure and the train rolling stock & these new trains, which will initially operate on the Dublin/Cork route from mid January 2007 & on other routes from late 2007/2008 ,will be fitted out with very good retail buffet/bar facilities and we would hope that our customer requirements for food and beverage requirements would be served from these improved onboard customer facilities. Professional on board catering personnel who staff these facilities, can also of course use their discretion in the sale of alcohol & to ensure that alcohol is not sold to juniors or to those customers, who may already be intoxicated.

I hope that the above information clarifies the situation for you.

Thank you for using Iarnrod Eireann rail services & could I take this opportunity to extend the Seasons Greeting to you and your family.

    Regards & best wishes ,

    Donal Horan,
    Manager Train Catering,
    Iarnrod Eireann.

In England and Wales (maybe Scotland too) you can drink where ever you want, whenever you want UNLESS it is specifically outlawed e.g. now public transport, most of the streets around Camden and a few other places but they are pretty well signposted. It is weird seeing people drinking on the street here, and formerly on the tubes/buses, who were not winos/junkies but it was fine and I partook myslef once or twice.

It was already illegal to be drunk an disorderly on public transport so why not just enforce that? You'd have to have a lot of drink with you and to be going a long, long way to get on sober and get wasted by just drinking on the tube.

All they have done now is stop the people who would have had one can/bottle on the tube on the way home from work on a Friday evening from having that one can/bottle because they don't want to get in trouble.

I didn't vote for Boris, the outer London commuters did bet they didn't think that lush would ban them form drinking on their way home from work, fuck 'em
