is wii fit really any good??
Is it just a fun device or can people really loose weight and get properly fit using it? I cant see how it can do this. It looks like a bit of a con to me.
Anyone defending the board can you use actual examples, not just I love nintendo so I'll reply of course its good, to back up your reply. cheers

on the big thread on it on the front page of this forum someone said there were doing jogging on it that equated to 5.5kms.

if you combine that jogging and a healthy diet you'll lose weight.

on the spot running? nah I dont take that as a 5km run and as for boxing, boxing the air. Sure why not do Tai bo or what ever thats called..Not being convinced here.

While I wouldn't use Wii Fit to actually get fit, heading out doors and eating a healthy diet is the way to go, Nintendo's philosophy is pretty good.... 'any exercise is better than none'.

Whats to convince. Jogging on the spot is a great aerobic exercise, and "punching the air" is exactly the same as tai bo.

I'm not sure what you're expecting from the thing? The board won't lose the weight for you. If you're jogging and doing tai bo anyway, it probably won't help.

If you don't do enough exercise and think that a voice from the TV telling you your ocverweight will help motivate you, this might be your thing.

I got it there last month, I'd reccomend it.

The best part is tracking your progress, you can see how much you've worked out on it through charts and also a graph of your weight loss/gain. You can really see how your weight goes up if you pig out on a chinese or drops if you starve yourself... I jump on it every morning before heading to work to weigh in, and then do a workout on it two or three evenings a week.

My weight trend tends to be downward during the week and then spikes upwards at the weekend after a night on the beers and kebabs.

As for the workouts themselves they are good, standard muscle workouts which time you and make sure you're doing the action, good for motivation as otherwise you can give up with pushups half way through a set of reps but its like having a personal trainer there to push you on.

Yoga is a bit girly to be honest, but it does help you stretch and get you quite relaxed.

The areobic exercises are good for getting the heart rate up, I generally jog around my living room, from one corner to the other, an island lap takes about 12 minutes I think, so don't know how far you'd normally go jogging for 12 minutes but there ya are. Boxing is good, really gets me sweating so must be doing something good!!

Balance games are just a bit of fun though you can work up a little bit of a sweat on them aswell.

Handy for me as I wasnt to get fit, but never go to the gym so its handy that I can just turn it on whenever I want. Also, nobody else has to see me in a big red faced sweaty mess so saves me some embarassment!! Buy it, you wont regret it.

Have to say for myself I find that very useful too. It's good to see your weight gradually going down, and the fear of a spike is enough to make you think twice about getting a double bacon cheese whopper meal in BK at lunch.

Also adding the Wii Fit channel to the wii was a good idea ... every time you log it lets you know when you last did a body test .... and for me I get embarrassed if it goes on beyond 2 days. Makes me think I've been a lazy bastard

the biggest let down about Wii Fit is that they don't have any recommended routines, nor do they even allow you to set some customized routines that you would like to follow. I can't believe they put so much effort and R+D into the game, and released it without that as a feature.

Yeah I wonder sometimes about exactly how much testing it went through.

The most annoying thing for me is at the end of every workout it asks you to "Retry" or "Quit". That's alright on the skiing or games ones, but on the muscle/yoga workouts its a complete pain in the ass cos I keep hitting retry and then having to wait till it starts to quit out back to the menu.

I wish they could patch it or somethin

Try hitting "Quit" next time ;)

Yeah, but retry is the default, so if you're just mashing the A button trying to get back to the menu, it doesn't work. I've experienced that a few times as well.

    Is Wii Fit any good?

That depends on your current level of fitness - if you are already quite sporty and fit it will certainly NOT replace what you are doing.

If you are like me on the other hand then hell yeah it's good - I've lost weight doing it but not as much as if I had been doing it every day like I should.

I also reckon the balance board will have some excellent future applications so it's worth buying for that.

If you are jogging at a steady pace on the spot - that is an excellent aerobic exercise as is the boxing - all the yoga poses are excellent and the muscle workouts will work if done properly - of course you can do all these things without Wii fit but it's not as fun and the Wii tracks your progress for you which is a good motivational tool.

In conclusion, it certainly will work for people like me who need the exercise and hate the idea of gyms and those fitness vampires that frequent them.
