Anyone know what the story is with lodging money into an Irish bank account while in America. Can I just go into any bank with an A/c number and a sort code and lodge it that way??

Not that I've ever heard of. You could try using wire transfer from an American bank but there is more than likely a fee or some sort (outgoing fee some of the banks call it). I used to just post a bank draft over to my parents to lodge for me.

Maybe not the cheapest option but you could Western Union to someone in IE and have them lodge for you ?

In order to do so you'll have to have a USA bank account, otherwise youll have to use Western Union.

If you do have a bank account, you can transfer to your Irish account. Ask your bank for your IBAN number and the banks SWIFT reference.

I paid $20 in 2001 to transfer to a French bank account.

    Paypal or XEtradae may help?

Yep, the fee is now ~$25.

Oh, don't use the word 'lodge' or 'lodgement'. Not US-speak. But makes for some very quizzical looks!
