Looks under exposed to me, without the -2/3 exposure comp it probably would have been about right, nothing that cant be sorted in PP.

Can you post a screen grab of the histogram from this shot, I would presume its bunched to the left.

It looks to be more than a full stop under exposed on my screen.

The Image was taken about 4.30 ish

I have corrected the exposure in photoshop
and the result is as follows

    full size here
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3222/2541847454_828bd1b931_o.jpg

histogram from RAW is as follows

    2541855412_80933396c1.jpg

The problem is as they say on various forums and etc that D80 Over exposes and you need to dial the exposure compensation of -0.7 to get near correct exposures.
Also I bought the 50mm f1.8 and its very easy to over expose with that lens as its f1.8.

I am just trying to develop my understanding of properly exposed image technically.

do you think the adjusted image is properly exposed ?
or is it still under exposed ?

If I have an over/under exposed picture I just use PP of the top of my head, just like cooking, I never follow times just work out at the time what's best!

No matter what folks say on forums, the individual circumstances will determine whether you need to dial in exposure comp, the histogram is the key to learning what is happening, you need to keep an eye on it.
Here is a decent primer if you need it, generally you will be looking for a decent spread of tones acccross the histogram but again it all depends on the individual shot.

do you calibrate your screen in any way? do you have an LCD? they tend to have the brightness way to high
