I found a wasps nest the other day in a hole in our house. Unfortunately it will have to be distroyed. :( Its too close to the back door. Dont want the kids getting stung by any these.

Anyway... All taken on a Tripod with EF-S 60mm Macro manual focus, Extension tube, Ringlite flash, f/16 @ 250ms

Thanks for the comments guys. I used FMs Velvia Vision plugin in Photoshop to to give the images a little umph.... The sharpness is down to Tripod and shutter speed.

    Those are excellent pics!

I had a wasp nest under my porch, they came and went via the ventilation holes under the door. It's possible to live along-side them and unless you aggravate them or annoy them, they're easy to get on with.

This nest is right beside the back door. Alot of traffic in and out. Especially in the summer. Though I don't really have a say in the matter. Her indoors rules the roost on this matter... ;)

Mine was under the FRONT DOOR. :)

Heh...advantages to having a nest close by:
    1. Will provide free nature study course for the kids.
    2. Will deter other flying insects.
    3. Will keep you busy for the whole summer!

    :)

How much did that MR-14 set you back? Also wondering if you've used it for non-macro work.

Brilliant shots by the way, you must have been pretty damn close seeing as it was the 60mm you were using :)

cool shots dude, I get a lot of wasps nests in the shed in the summer as someone said they are no bother unless you attack them though with kids about its better safe than sorry

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,281 ✭✭✭Ricky91t

Bad about destroying the nest
    Nothing wrong with wasps
just keep the kids away from them!
    Nice pics though

    Hi Roen
I've tried it a bit for portraits but it wasn't too impressed by the results. Apart from red eye which is easy to fix. Unlike a Studio Ring flash, the flash ring is quite small. A shadow is cast on to the background all around the subject. Here's an example. My nephew is standing about 8 feet from the camera and at least 2 & a half feet from the wall. You can clearly see the shadow. Like a darkish halo around him. It might work better for closer head shots. The eyes can look particularly good with it. Like Pro studio shots.

Don't go near the Wasps and they will leave you alone....
Donno how you can get pleasure in photographing these beautiful creatures and then just exterminate them. It just seem's like you are using them.

    Me.

How do you tell that to a 20 month old little girl? Everyday she's in and out of that door at least 30 times a day.... and the rest. Besides, it would be too much on her little mind to deal with. If you have kids you'd know what I was talking about.

You presume I got the orders to exterminate them then tought to myself... better get some shots while I can...

I'm under orders from the boss to block the nest. Nothing I can do about it. It wasn't till after I took the photos that her indoors put the foot down.

Apologies not needed Animalrights. You didn't say anything wrong. Different views and opinions on stuff (whatever it is) is the reason we all keep coming back here to boards.

    Thanks

    on an unrelated note....

anymore details about shooting these? did you have to take many, i.e. the shoot and hope method or did you autofocus and just get it right?

I got another similar thing, although mine wasn't flying and it was under daylight, but i found it almost impossible to get a clean shot...

I'll post em later when I'm at my pc...

The setup was really quite simple really. What made a difference for these is I was guaranteed a flight path which, as you know, is the hardest thing to get with insects. All taken on a Tripod with EF-S 60mm Macro, Extension tube, Ringlite, f/16 @ 250ms. I forgot to mention earlier. I used a Remote Controller the TC-80N3. I set the lense to manual, carefully adjusted the focus then waited. At first I tried the shutter on high speed 6.5fs, but the flash couldnt keep up with it. So I switched the camera to single shot mode. It took a while to get the timing right. But in time, I was able to judge their take off and landing speed quite well.

These are stunning, as I think has already been determined :) I love no. 3 in particular. How long were you out there for? I can't seem to catch insects in flight, even using a flash. I always give up and go back to flowers :(

Insects in flight are very diffult to shoot. I guess I was there for a little more than an hour. Thats why I like these two Hover-Fly pics. Out in open space without a flash and wide open aperture.

This is one I took using trial and error, took about 25 shots to get this I reckon, I just shutdown the aperature and guestimated focus... f/22 1/160th

I cant ever see that working for flying insects though which is why I was so impressed with your first 4 snaps...

Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm really very susprised by the positive reaction to these.

Unfortunately I forgot to mark this thread C&C so I got no real criticism of the photos (apart from the extermination issue). A lot of folks seemed to like the saturated look of the images. Me too but, technically and in the cold light of day I think I over did Velvia Vision thing a bit. Here is #3 reworked a little bit. This time I also used Velvia Vision but then saved it off as a layer and reduced the opacity to 20%. It now looks more realistic to me, easier on the eye.

stunning indeed....and i also agree with you, the nest has to go, especially with children around (those who say otherwise obviously don't have children).

And if anyone criticizes the pics just tell them to 'buzz' off......cough, I'll get my coat.
